Balm for the Soul - Organ Concert at St. Paul's Cathedral

Aug 03, 2006 23:45

So, raayat and I have both had pretty tough weeks (and they aren't over yet *argh*), so we both decided to cut our respective work days "short" (meaning we left before dark) to take in the concert at St. Pauls to raise money for the refurbishment of their world renown organ. It was exactly what we needed too. There was a really nice range of music ( Read more... )

No more Noto, oh no. (Sorry, had to type it that way. But the thought of Noto disapearing is upsetting.)

Another fantastic review; cheers fox_c! Particularly struck by your reviews of the Whitlock and Howells. "Haunting" and "introspective" are not words I've ever associated with organ and I am therefore happily intrigued. Smiling at Mozart synaesthesia; such moments are rare for me with music though Wagner's Rienzi Overture once made me see and taste burnt ginger. I was logging in this AM to see what's on at St Martins for the free lunchtime concert today and your music review has whetted by taste (ear?) buds indeed.

Japanese restaurants in London: have you tried Ramen Seto (near Carnaby Street)? For sushi, we like Kulu Kulu in Soho. Both dead cheap and tasty.

I'm glad you enjoyed the reviews! St. Martin's is one of our favorite places for concerts, though their repotoire tends to be a bit repetative, imho. Is there anything good playing currently?

I'll definitely put those two on my list! We're always looking for good resteraunts, and raayat LOVES sushi.

St Martins does get repetitive in their offerings. I don't care that it's a new group - it's still the Four Seasons or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik or the Requiem! Still, the church does heavily depend upon their evening concerts to fund the afternoon series as well as the general ministry of the church. I suppose you offer what sells tickets. I like the afternoon concerts -- free (donations) and more diverse in offerings. That said, today is a piano/violin duo -- a combination I've seen quite a bit at St Martins. Fingers crossed that they play something inspiring. Will post later with the programme details. x

Piano/violin might be quite nice. Can't wait to hear what you think about it.

*Wow* that's an amazing program! I have made some very wonderful friends at OU organ concerts. There's something about them that makes the world (and the performance space) better.

I don't know Noto, but I'm happy to raise a glass of sake to its memory. When you make it to Boulder someday, I'll haveto take you to Sushi Torah. I heart Sushi Tora.

I loved the organ space in Gatlett. My freshman year I used to take my homework there to read while people practiced. =)

Well, hopefully by the time you come back to see us we'll have found a replacement. Still, it is a very sad day. One of the few places in the city that made us feel like locals.
