So here I am at the end of the week; not too bad, all things said and done. Work is moving along at a nice clip - not too slow, not too frantic. Just about right. Granted this won't last long, but hey, enjoy it while you can ( Read more... )

Ooooh, Notes From A Small Island is EXCELLENT!!! I loved it! A really good read for a foreigner in the UK. Well, for anyone really. But I think he picks up on a lot of things that foreigners might notice more. Made me giggle a lot, as well, at times. Which is always good :-)

It was a Christmas present from our lovely schiehallion and I am also enjoying it. The funniest part so far is the insane asylum. Mostly because as I was reading that part an obviously crazy woman got on the train this morning and kept alternatively muttering and singing lewdly at the top of her lungs. I nearly dissolved in laughter at the irony.

But, yes, Culture shock fiction is made even better as an expat. In fact, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (The trilogy of 5) has a special place in my heart, because I read it while I was in Russia and completely identified with Author Dent.

In the US it's under the Sci-Fi heading, not the young adult if anyone is looking for it.
I found it at a B&N that was closing it's doors and having a 50% off everything sale. Along with my 10% discount card, I was basically getting new paperbacks for $3. Unfortunately, of the three trilogies I found that looked interesting (including this one) they only had two of the volumes.

I'm so glad you got around to finding the rest of it and reading it all ( ... )

Oh! Heresy versus Blasphemy. We actually just covered this in my Literary Obscenity of the 20th Century class. Heresy generally not only attacks the Church but puts forth an organized or structured alternative or counter argument; a genuine undermining as opposed to a blasphemy vague attack or disrespect. It's been a while since I've read His Dark Materials, but I think you could make a very good argument for it being heretical, although conversely I think that you would have a much harder time with Harry Potter since it seems much less of a structured and organized counter option to conventional religion. Of course on top of all that there is the question of WHAT religion is it heretical to, since Lutherism was heretical to Catholicism but I'm sure the practitioners don't consider themselves heretics ( ... )

What is candidating? What do you mean by discernment?

I was a candidate for Foundation in Ministry training in ...whenever it was.... 2002? Or so? Obviously, i wasn't successful. At the time I could have used a Subtle Knife to help me!

Discernment of God's voice in that context...decision making in general. I dither a LOT (as you are gathering - I'm talking to you online while I write this).

lots of bad pressure on my knees and lower back

When I first started doing kung fu, I hated doing "horse stance" (a wide-legged stance) because it put pressure on my knees. I could feel them ache and I was sure it was bad for my joints. Then I realized that what I thought was my complaining knee joints was actually my complaining thigh muscles, which were becoming stronger.

Make sure the instructor is competently trained and doing the exercises true to the way they were developed; if so, definitely give it another chance or two. Good luck!

I try to snack on healthy granola bars and nuts (although those can be high calorie to feel full). Try oatmeal or such in the morning, a snack before lunch (right now I'm eating cheese), lunch with protien, afternoon snack (I like granola as I said), and then dinner. You'll really have to watch portions since it's a lot more eating, but it helps level your blood sugar out too. I also hit the gym before dinner and that helps a lot with the afternoon munchies and dinner.

That's a really good point and something that I thought about during class. One of the really good things about my dancing days though, and having sustained a long-term injury, is that I'm generally pretty good about evaluating my body's limits and what kind of pain is productive and what isn't. At the point I was on Thursday, the pain I was feeling in those postures was unproductive pain. Though I can't be sure if it was a) the posture being just flat out bad for me (like the fish pose in Ashtanga is), b)being bad for me on that day or c) just means I need to build up supporting muscles and will be able to do those poses eventually. So yes, probably another class or two to see how my body functions with the style, but I'm a bit skeptical. We'll see.

I want to see Alegria! I have missed every chance to see Cirque perform by just a few days, quite upsetting.

I saw my first two cirque shows in Las Vegas. The nice thing about them having permenent shows there is that you can schedule your trip around when you can get tickets =). I'm still wanting to go back to see the new Zoomanity one, so we may have to organise a Cirque pilgrimage one of these days!

I actually almost bought the soundtrack to it the other day, which caused me to do a bit of searching online for some video clips. It looks like a VERY interesting show.
