Online student-teacher friendships

A CNN article came up recently that definitely occupies a concern of mine ever since I started working as a college instructor. Basically, it's about student-teachers friending each other of social networks like Facebook or MySpace, both of which I have an account for ( Read more... )

Locking to friends only, but having a fairly open policy about who you friend is a reasonable way to go in my mind. public posts are indexed and archived by several sites that crawl LJ to specifically archive every post that has ever been made public, including ones that have been deleted or hidden. Even then, I don't post anything I wouldn't want anyone of my friends list to see, but it adds an extra buffer of avoiding drama or harassment.

I had students digging me up online while I was a TA. They had found at least my okcupid profile, and a few students attempted to friend me on Facebook.

I agree, that it's definitely a reasonable way to go. :)

Yeah, I've had one student friend me on facebook so far. Fortunately for me, my facebook doesn't really have much personal stuff there! Not sure what to think if they found my OkCupid profile though!
