Ugh, god. Unexpected development of Social Network fic? People writing about my hometown again and getting it WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

Although really, nothing beats the author who thought that San Jose was a vacation destination for a person living in San Francisco, or that you could smell the ocean when you arrived in Palo Alto.

No.

Just. No.

HELLO. Unexpected side effect of people writing J2 rps. I wanted to kill people daily.

HAH, funny story. One time I wrote a J2 AU set in California, but didn't specify and I made people all dickish and homophobic, and this girl freaked out and said I was portraying Texas in a bad light.

BIATCH, HATERS ARE EVERYWHERE.

oh, I feel your pain. it's not specific to any one fandom? but people write the most disastrous portrayals of New Orleans in fic. it makes me craaaaazy.

I believe it. Palo Alto was such a rare place to set fic until SPN, so I never had to worry.

SNORT. Omg, that amuses me so much. And the rest of the fic is spent writing about how they couldn't find parking...

You'd think Social Network fandom would be crackerjack at Internet research, but it's actually one of the worst.

Except for the fact that they know EVERYTHING about Mark Zuckerberg, the actual dude. Something I find creepy. In GK we have a similar situation where the actors are playing real live people running around today, and there's a line. Do not cross it.

That's true: both GK and TSN fandoms are a weird mix of RPF and FPF. (Also, how many acronyms can I cram into one sentence?) Frankly, I prefer to ignore the fact that real people with those names actually exist-as far as I'm concerned, I saw a movie about some characters, and I pretty much make up everything that wasn't in the movie (with the admitted exception of some RL details that have crept into fanon, like Chris Hughes being gay).

Well also, the actors are also more attractive and might have more chemistry than the actual people. Like Nate and Brad in GK? Don't appear to actually care that much about each other in real life. But the way it was scripted into the show? EYE-FUCKING ALL OVER THE PLACE.

They can have all the misconceptions they want about LA. That place sucks anyway. But Bay Area misconceptions? Not on. Not on at all.
