My parent's wedding

Feb 05, 2010 10:59

Growing up, we had been told by our parents that the photographer had ruined the photos to there wedding and that there was nothing left. However, imagine our surprise to find these photos of them walking out of the church that my dad had kept. We found them after he had passed away. These were taken in December 1954.

Oh, I love hearing things like this. It's so wonderful when mementos as special as these come to light!

I also LOVE that last one of your mother with the photographer stamp on it.

I suspect he may have given them to her when he ruined the official pictures.... or she just took them and never gave them back. It'll be a mystery.

Any idea why they claimed the photos didn't exist?
They're beautiful!
She doesn't appear visibly pregnant or anything so I can't think of a reason to hide them.
Thank you for sharing!

Well, that's because she wasn't pregnant. They're first child wasn't born until eleven months after they were married.

I suspect my mother missed placed them when we moved into our home in the early 60's. She died in a car accident in the late 70's. My father may have found them when we moved out in the 80's. Because he never recovered from her death (never was involved with anyone serious, no other marriages, and the mention of my mom would sometimes highly upset him.) I can only imagine that he highly coveted these pictures and didn't want to share them with us. I know there were several other things of hers that he kept that we didn't know about until after his death.

Oh yes, that's what I meant.
My first thought was 'if she were pregnant and showing, I can see hiding them IF it bothered them'.
But since she doesn't look pregnant...I presumed she wasn't and figured 'okay there's gotta be a vastly different reason then...' which is what you shared. Thank you for sharing these, they're beautiful photos.
And in my work with elderly patients, after they pass on...a number of my patient's families often told of situations similar to yours. Maybe not the same as treasured away wedding photos but other keepsakes that were too painful to share openly but too precious to throw away.
Again, thank you for sharing them!

Looking at their smiles, and the serene look on your mother's face in the last photo --- I can see why your papa stayed so devoted. I'm sorry you lost your parents, and your mom at a young age. I am very happy they found each-other though, for the time they had.

Best
J

Thanks! They looked so happy. My dad is practically glowing.

My mom and I shared one thing in common. The first boy we dated we married. :)
