A short One-shot that came to me after watching epi 44 (and being incredibly sad about Crow disappearing/dieing).
It has already been up on ff.net a few days; but I like sharing (not to mention that at times I love attention.)
Enjoy.

--- Black Bird Requiem ---
Wordlessly Yusei starred at the black-grey helmet that he had recovered from the B.A.D. just an hour earlier. The area, usually full with people, had been turned into a ghost town. However as much as the silence, the total void of life in had disturbed him, nothing had hurt him more than finding Black Bird, tumbled over, the helmet a few meters further off (and he knew that Crow would never leave his D-Wheel, his pride, behind in the way he had found it).
Despite knowing immediately what must have happened he had started to call out for Crow, clinging to the faint hope that despite all odds, Crow had found a way to escape, to survive. But nobody had answered. Crow hadn’t appeared out of nowhere, laughing and smirking while calling him stupid for worrying over him, declaring that Yusei should know him better than that.
He had stood alone on the otherwise silent street until Jack had fetched him to return to the House, his expression grim and almost unreadable, but Yusei had known the blond long enough to catch the flicker of distress in his eyes when he recognised the abandoned D-Wheel’s design.
It was the same as the one Yusei was feeling now, this feeling of loss, the disbelieve, the thought of “This can’t possibly be happening”. They had felt it once before, had shared it in the night in that Team Satisfaction had been broken up by Kiryus deeds, but at least Kiryu’s fate had been certain (or had seemed to them that way). What had and would happen to Crow was unknown.
He set the helmet aside, knowing that soon either Aki or the twins would look for him, would ask what was wrong (Jack wouldn’t; he knew better than to ask and he knew that if anything this just made Yusei more determined to fight and defeat their enemy). But, despite his attempts not to think about it, his mind always returned to a promise made in childhood days. A vow that Crow had renewed twice; once after they had lost Kiryu, the second time when Jack had left them for the city.
“I won’t disappear. Not now, not in ever. The moment you need me I’ll be there; just like you would be for me. That’s what we promised, right?”
Crow’s words never truly left Yuseis mind since, they had always had been comfort in times when he had felt loneliness creep onto him, just before meeting Rally-tachi and later in the city, when he had felt surrounded by enemies without an ally in sight. But now they were source of pain instead of comfort.
Because Crow HAD disappeared, had become victim to the power of the Dark Signer. A power that Yusei didn’t, couldn’t understand and that made questionable if he would ever see Crow again even if the Signer won the war against their Dark counterparts.
His rational knew of course that if somebody was to blame then it was the Dark Signer, who took souls and lives as they saw fit. But a small part of him couldn’t help but fault Crow for breaking his promise.
