Yes, it was very dark. It was rather uncomfortable to write, for personal reasons, but I wanted to demonstrate the changes in Narcissa and her personal growth when she saw someone whom she would consider close to innocent being corrupted by monstrous means. Her suppressed anger leaches out on Draco, for being used in such ghastly ways too, even if he does prevent the worst happening.
I wanted to show this is a redemption story, where actions speak louder than words, and that actions have consequences. Narcissa was already fiercely protective of Draco and watching how he was being used and manipulated by the rest was one of the final breaking points for her.
Even a Pureblood witch can love, especially when it's her son whose life hangs in the balance. Her love is a counterpoint to her Sister, who is without conscience or morals when it comes to her family.
