Ah, the viewing party. I used to co-host weekly "Lost" viewing parties, but eventually we gave them up as the show started going downhill and haven't yet managed to organize them since its revival. Did you see Louisa's GG In Media Res piece last fall? I think there may indeed be a lot of fannishness in that particular engagement (she's done work on fashion and Roswell as well), but its ties to consumerism more than anything else, I think make it a less easily classifiable fan activity....

I think we have to agree to disagree...I was thinking more of fortfrolic's Hogwarts outfits and yes, i do think there's a spectrum (but then I have no issue making a distinction between someone creating and maintaining a wiki and someone randomly adding one entry once or between someone who casually reads a story every once in a while and someone who writes and runs communities and ficathons...)

One thing is only "better" than the other if we actually think being a fan is a good thing :)
