Summary: Chanyeol is a guardian, and Baekhyun is his ward. Chanyeol has had many wards before, but there's something different with Baekhyun. Something unique. Something interesting.
Like clockwork, Chanyeol sat on the same cloud he sat on whenever he watched the brunette. He’d watch the brunette wake up, go through his morning routine, walk to work, work the whole day, walk home, go through his evening routine, then go to sleep. Occasionally, the brunette would go out with some of his co-workers or friends. To any other guardian, the brunette was simply living a mundane life.
To Chanyeol, every little thing the brunette did piqued his interest. The way the brunette’s hair would stand up in every direction when he’d just woken up. The way the tie on the brunette’s suit ended up just the tiniest bit crooked every morning. The way the brunette’s face somehow glowed every time he smiled.
It was these things that made Chanyeol watch the brunette more than his other wards.
It was also the reason why Joonmyun scolded him time and again.
“You’re supposed to watch over your wards equally, Chanyeol.”
“I know,” Chanyeol would respond, rising up from his seat on the cloud. He took one last look at the brunette before moving to watch over his next ward.
This moment feels like I was born as a child who knew nothing
I closed my eyes again in case it would be a dream
You were standing in front of my desperate self and praying
Guardians - ethereal beings whose sole purpose is to keep watch over their wards; protecting them until it was their time. Most of the time, guardians stayed up above the clouds, merely observing their wards’ lives, but on special occasions, they were allowed to temporarily hold a mortal form and walk amongst humans.
Those special occasions were no festive moments though. Those special occasions comprised of moments when the life of their wards were in danger; in danger of being ended before the appropriate time.
In the case of the brunette, it was a special occasion that Chanyeol both anticipated and dreaded. It was a chance to see the brunette’s life at a closer perspective. It was also a chance for the brunette’s life to end.
Guardians who lost their wards before the appropriate time were punished. Most of the time, the number of wards entrusted to them were decreased, a sign that they were untrustworthy, and a signal to other guardians to shun that certain guardian. Other times, they were sent away, to a place none of the guardians who returned could speak of.
Chanyeol had never failed at being a guardian before, and it was something he did not wish to do in the near future.
Yet he could not stop thinking of his first meeting with the brunette. He wondered what it would feel like to look into the brunette’s eyes. What it would feel to have the brunette speak to him, and no one else. What it would feel to have the brunette’s skin beneath Chanyeol’s mortal fingers.
Just once, I want to walk side by side with you
It was sudden, when Chanyeol felt a pull throughout his body. It was a pull, so strong, that he had to turn away from the ward he was observing, quickly getting to the spot where he could see the brunette.
There was no mistaking it; the pull was from the brunette. It was a pull that signified that the brunette had done certain actions and made certain decisions that would lead to danger.
It was not the first time Chanyeol had changed to mortal form, but it was the first time that he experienced something inside his being that he had not experienced before. It felt like something was tightly gripping his stomach, squeezing the life out of him. Everything and everyone he passed by as he followed the brunette walk to work was a blur, a blur that accompanied a throbbing in his head.
Chanyeol had been warned before, that along with mortal flesh, other human burdens were also something guardians had to deal with when changing. He had never stayed mortal long enough to understand what the warning was for, but this time, it had hit him the moment he finished changing.
It clicked inside his head what it was he was experiencing.
Fear.
Hearing the horn of the rushing truck, both Chanyeol and the brunette turned to see a child mindlessly crossing the street as the truck continued on its path. Just as the brunette made a move to push the child out of the way, so did Chanyeol.
Fear for the brunette.
As the brunette pushed the child, he stumbled, his legs tangling together as he fell on to the path of the truck.
Fear the brunette would die.
Chanyeol’s nerves pushed to make his legs move faster.
Fear that he would lose the brunette.
A few seconds. That was all it took. A few seconds later, and the brunette that now lay beneath Chanyeol would not be breathing.
Breathe after breathe continued to enter and leave Chanyeol’s body as the mortal form he had taken caught up with the sudden energy Chanyeol had used to get to the brunette. Shouts and murmurs were buzzing in the background as Chanyeol pulled his head up, looking at the brunette’s face.
The brunette stared wide-eyed at the man on top of him, his body trying to calm his own nerves down.
“You saved me” were the words that left the brunette’s mouth.
Taken by the soft wind to your world
You asked me brightly where I came from to your side
It was after the repeated apologies, ‘thank you’s, and ‘are you sure you’re alright’s from the child’s mother that the brunette turned to speak to Chanyeol.
“So how many times do I have to say thank you to you?” the brunette joked, his face starting the glow as he smiled at Chanyeol.
When no response came from the giant, the brunette continued to speak, not letting the smile on his face falter. “Thank you so much! It definitely wasn’t part of my plan to end up endangering myself when I went to save the kid. Then again, I didn’t really think the whole ‘push the kid out of the way’ plan, did I?”
Again, the brunette tried to joke, hoping to get a smile out of the giant.
“Look, it’s a small token of my gratitude, but let me buy you breakfast, okay? It’s the least I could do for my savior,” the brunette said, pulling on the giant’s sleeves towards a café the brunette frequented.
Once the brunette pushed Chanyeol down unto a chair at the café, he went off to the cashier, ordering them both food and drinks. Chanyeol knew that he should left the mortal world by now. Guardians weren’t supposed to stay in the mortal world for too long, but Chanyeol could not separate himself from the brunette, not after what they both just went through.
It still shocked Chanyeol how much fear he had felt moments before. He had never felt such an onslaught of emotions before, and it got Chanyeol thinking if it was a reaction to being in mortal form or if it was something that actually came from him.
He was so deep in thought that he did not notice the brunette plop down in front of him, staring curiously at his giant savior.
“Baekhyun.”
Chanyeol looked up at the brunette, confusion clear on his face.
“My name’s Baekhyun. We’ve gone through so much together in the past hour that at the least we should leave here today knowing each other’s name,” Baekhyun said, smiling again at Chanyeol.
The giant could not help but stare at Baekhyun in response. He had never learned the names of his wards, and never had he been asked for his name. There has never been a need to, and Chanyeol thought there would never be a need to, but it seemed as if everything he knew, everything he did, and everything he planned to do, would be changed by the brunette in front of him. And for some reason, that was alright with Chanyeol.
“Chanyeol. My name’s Chanyeol.”
He didn’t mind having the brunette make things interesting for him.
And I told you it was a secret
Wherever we walk together
Will be paradise
Every time it was Baekhyun’s turn to have Chanyeol watch over him, Chanyeol took mortal form and observed from the land of humans. Surely other guardians had better things to do than watch Chanyeol do his job, so he felt it was safe to continue watching over Baekhyun in such a way. It was also a better way of keeping an eye out for Baekhyun, seeing as he could step in and protect him should the need arise, or so Chanyeol defended to no one but himself.
Chanyeol’s constant watch did not go unnoticed by the brunette though. It was difficult not to notice, seeing as the giant suddenly frequented the same places Baekhyun frequented, such as the café they first ate together at.
Chanyeol, on the other hand, thought that the brunette knew nothing of what the giant was doing. It was because of this that the brunette was able to catch him off guard when he came to sit at the same table the giant was sitting at.
“You’ve been stalking me,” Baekhyun said, a playful grin on his face.
Growing the tiniest bit flustered, Chanyeol opened his mouth to respond, only to be cut off by the laughter of the brunette.
“I was kidding. I know you’re not some crazy stalker. You seem way too nice for that. Hmm-maybe you’re actually my guardian angel.”
At that, Chanyeol’s eyes widened. Baekhyun couldn’t help but laugh again at how Chanyeol looked like a deer caught in headlights.
“It was just a joke. I know angels and the like don’t exist. Though it is sweet of you to watch over me like some kind of protector.”
When Chanyeol’s eyes stayed the same way, Baekhyun couldn’t help his grin grow wider. “You really got to learn when people are joking with you. How about this, why don’t you accompany me to dinner later, that way you don’t have to go sneaking around to watch over me. What do you say?”
Chanyeol couldn’t pull his eyes away from how Baekhyun’s eyes seemed to sparkle every time he joked with Chanyeol. There was just something about Baekhyun that made him feel lightheaded, nervous, and at the same time…
happy.
It was only after Baekhyun left the café that Chanyeol realized what had just happened. Staring at the cup of coffee the brunette left for him, Chanyeol swore he felt his heart beat the slightly faster.
He was having dinner with the brunette later.
You are an eye-blinding entity compared to Michael
Who would remember you, I will not forgive it
Like the beginning when stepping into Eden
Believing you every day from the bottom of my heart
Chanyeol had always wondered why mortals felt it was a problem what to wear to an event. To Chanyeol, it was just a folly humans partook in. Now, he somewhat understood the numerous steps humans took to make themselves “look good”. As Chanyeol paced in front of the restaurant Baekhyun told him to meet him at, he could not help but glare at the hair his mortal form took on.
It looked too much like a blonde mess that Chanyeol thought did not look right for his dinner with Baekhyun. It felt off, compared to the clean black suit he had donned for the occasion. Surely the brunette would make fun of how he looked for the evening, but then Chanyeol could not help but smile at that thought. Even if Baekhyun were to laugh at Chanyeol’s expense, he would still look like the radiant being he naturally was.
“So I finally see the giant smile.”
Turning around, Chanyeol felt the air knocked out of him. Somehow, Baekhyun looked even more radiant, looking sleek and handsome in his own suit.
“Sorry if you had to dress up. I feel like I haven’t properly paid you back for saving my life all those months ago. I know having a few meals together probably won’t do it, but I want to at least show you part of how grateful I am.”
With another smile on his face, Baekhyun took Chanyeol’s arm and entered the restaurant.
It was the first of many nights that Chanyeol spent with Baekhyun, and also the first time he spent with the brunette with a smile on his face as well. It wasn’t the first time his heart beat sped up while in the presence of the brunette.
But it was the first time Chanyeol didn’t question it.
I always want to protect you
So that even the small things won’t tire you out, I’m eternally in love
2 years.
In those 2 years since he started guarding Baekhyun in the mortal world, not once did Chanyeol feel the pull he felt the first time he took mortal form for the brunette’s sake. Instead, he had felt what he could only describe as what humans called “love”. It was the only explanation for the way his heart beat faster, the way Baekhyun’s smile would leave him breathless, the way shivers ran down Chanyeol’s spine when he brushed his fingers on to Baekhyun’s skin.
Even now, as he watched over his other wards, the feeling of cupping Baekhyun’s cheek as he brushed his lips with the brunette’s would not leave his mind. It was a feeling Chanyeol could hardly forget, and the picture of Baekhyun red as a rose after the kiss was just as unforgettable. It had left him distracted many times in those 2 years, and it was not unnoticed by Joonmyun.
Many times he was told off by Joonmyun for not concentrating on the job, but Chanyeol hardly minded. He didn’t mind as long as he could continue guarding over Baekhyun. He didn’t mind as long as no harm befell the brunette.
Yes, love was the only explanation for how he felt for the brunette, and surely there was a chance Baekhyun returned the same feelings, seeing as he had proposed a week ago that they start living together. It was impossible of course, for him to live with Baekhyun, but by expressing his true feelings for him, maybe he would be able to make the brunette understand without telling him why he could not live with him.
It was as he was in deep thought on how to tell the Brunette, that he felt the pull. It was sudden, as it was 2 years ago. Quickly taking mortal form, he looked around for the brunette.
In an alleyway to his left the brunette stood, clutching on to his suitcase as tightly as he could as a stranger pointed a gun at him. Before Chanyeol could even move, three gunshots rang out, a cold feeling rushing in to Chanyeol as Baekhyun screamed in agony. The stranger then took the suitcase from the brunette, running away soon afterwards.
Quickly getting to the brunette’s side, Chanyeol picked Baekhyun up. He then started running towards the nearest hospital, grasping at Baekhyun for dear life as Baekhyun did to him.
It was as Baekhyun whispered Chanyeol’s name, pain evident in his voice, did Chanyeol decide that running simply wasn’t fast enough. Spreading his wings, he tightened his grip on the brunette as they took off to the air, the giant’s wings beating against the wind faster than it has ever done before.
Landing at the parking near the emergency door of the hospital, Chanyeol tucked his wings away, quickly running in to the hospital. After yelling at the hospital staff that he was indeed fine, that his shirt was just ripped, and that they needed to get help for the brunette, Chanyeol collapsed on to the floor, air leaving him as fast as it entered his body.
He was scared. More than he was before. He was scared that the brunette would leave him. That the brunette would leave him without knowing of how Chanyeol felt for the brunette. Tears started to run down the giant’s cheeks, Chanyeol unable to hold his emotions back. He was first and foremost Baekhyun’s guardian, responsible of protecting him until it was Baekhyun’s time to go, and yet only a few moments ago, the brunette was lying in his arms bleeding to death and there was nothing Chanyeol could do.
His sobs then racked his entire body, fear consuming him as time passed. It was only when the doctor came out to tell him the news that Chanyeol was able to stand up, walking to where the brunette lay on one of the hospital beds.
Chanyeol reached out and brushed a strand away from Baekhyun’s face, tears continuing to stream down his face. He only cried harder when the brunette opened his eyes and smiled at him.
“I was only joking when I said you were my guardian angel. Didn’t think it was the truth,” Baekhyun said, smiling as he brushed at Chanyeol’s wet cheeks.
Grabbing the hand on his cheek, Chanyeol brought it to his lips and kissed it repeatedly, apologizing to the brunette again and again.
“Hey now, why are you apologizing? You saved my life, yet again. If I owed you a ton for saving my life once, I don’t think I’ll be able repay you for saving my life twice.”
It amazed Chanyeol how Baekhyun was able to smile even after everything he’d been through.
Chanyeol then placed one long kiss on to the brunette’s palm as he said, “I love you.”
The look in Baekhyun’s eyes afterwards became Chanyeol’s favorite look.
“I love you too.”
It was the look Baekhyun showed him every time he confessed his love to him from then on.
As your guardian, I will block the stiff wind
Even though people turn their backs to you
Chanyeol found it amusing how eager Baekhyun looked whenever he would ask a question about his being a guardian. At first, Chanyeol thought Baekhyun would be scared, having seen him with his wings out, but Baekhyun had reacted in the complete opposite. He had loved the idea of Chanyeol being a guardian. Though, he once said, the idea of sharing Chanyeol’s time and attention made him slightly jealous, he nonetheless loved the idea of having a guardian for a boyfriend.
Chanyeol could only chuckle at that, thankful that Baekhyun could not see how the giant’s cheeks tinted red at the mention of being the brunette’s boyfriend.
If I could become the person
Who can wipe your tears on a tiring day
It will be paradise
“Chanyeol.”
Turning to one of the head guardians, Chanyeol was thankful he had not been called after he had taken mortal form. He had lost count how many times he had done so without there being any danger to any of his wards, instead, doing so to go back to the apartment he and Baekhyun had been living together at.
“What is it, Joonmyun?”
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’ve been doing, Chanyeol. You know it’s dangerous to take mortal form time and again when there is no need to do so.”
“I don’t understand what could be so dangerous about it. Nothing has happened to me after taking mortal form multiple times.”
Sighing, Joonmyun came closer, looking Chanyeol in the eye.
“Tell me, Chanyeol, are you sure nothing has happened to you? Nothing at all? Do you feel no changes on how you view this ward?”
At this, Chanyeol was unable to respond, taking silence as his response instead as he looked into Joonmyun’s eyes. There, he saw worry, worry for him.
When Joonmyun refused to say anything until he received a clear answer from the other guardian, Chanyeol decided to speak up.
“I fail to see how having my opinions of him changed means I’ll be in danger.”
Turning from Chanyeol, Joonmyun started to leave.
“If you think the punishments for letting your ward die earlier than meant to be is harsh, then the punishment for falling in love with a mortal is unthinkable,” Joonmyun said, before other guardians came to hold Chanyeol down, pulling him along to where judgement awaited him
I, who has fallen in love with no other place to
Go back, my wings have been taken away (oh no)
Baekhyun sat on the couch, his legs crossed, and his finger tapping away on the couch’s arm. He was late. Chanyeol was late. He always came back after the set period of time he would watch over his other wards, but this time, he had yet to come back.
Baekhyun knew that there were other lives he was responsible for, but surely he would have come back even for a short while to tell him that he would have to leave for a longer period of time.
If only there was some way to get a message up there, Baekhyun thought, then he remembered the two times Chanyeol saved his life.
Surely if Baekhyun’s life was in danger, Chanyeol would immediately come.
No, he thought, all the while shaking his head.
“He’d get mad at me if I did anything foolish.”
“Who’d get mad?” a voice rang through the apartment, making Baekhyun stand up from the couch and stare in awe at the giant standing near the entrance.
Quickly switching from looking happy to glaring at the giant, he stomped towards Chanyeol.
“Where have you been!? I was worried! You could have at least come and told me it’d be a while before you could come stay here again!”
Chuckling, Chanyeol cupped Baekhyun’s face, brushing his thumb on the reddening cheek of the brunette.
“I’m sorry, but I promise this will be the last time,” Chanyeol said, before placing a quick kiss on the brunette’s lips.
“I know you’re the guardian of other people too, but at least tell me next time, okay?”
Bending down to be at level with Baekhyun, Chanyeol looked Baekhyun in the eyes and said, “There won’t be a next time. From now on, I’m your full-time guardian.”
The brunette’s eyes widened, standing still in shock at what Chanyeol had just said, before pulling the giant down to kiss him.
All the while, the judgement handed down to him rang in his ears.
Even though I lost my everlasting life, the reason to my happiness
You are my eternity Eternally Love
“When that mortal’s time comes, he will move on to where all mortals go when they die. You, on the other hand, will go to where all guardians go when they’re relieved of their duties. From nothing we are made, to nothing we shall return. Spend your time wisely with that mortal, for when both of you perish, an eternity will pull you two apart.”
