hey, ran across this while doing some googling trying to remember whether it was just in my memory that Cooper is a former marine or some kind of fic-acquired fanon or in fact mentioned on the show. do you remember if it's something they mention directly? (this is driving me crazy, and one of those things where when a fandom's still so tiny it's very hard to easily answer!!)

It is actually canon, but I can't remember if it's mentioned in the show. It was mentioned in several interviews that Michael Cudlitz did - one was with AfterElton, if I'm correct - at the very least. I really think it was mentioned in the episode where Sherman puts the sleeper hold on the gigantic guy (Two Gangs), but, again, I'm incredibly not positive. Hope it helps?
