[When flipping through their journals, the residents will encounter an entry that seems to consist mostly of scribbles. If one squints, they may be able to recognize the alphabet, but that'll be quite the chore. People from Efinea already have peculiar handwriting, but thanks to Lambda's complete inexperience with putting a pen to paper, it came ( Read more... )

[In the process of sifting through the journal, Hubert's hand stops mid-motion when he notices the entry. He stares for a good minute or two, and has the sneaking suspicion that the scribbles are supposed to be the alphabet -- whether or not its theirs remains to be seen. Just to be sure, he responds. In much neater penmanship, of course.]

The alphabet?

[Finally, someone who can read.]

Yes.

[ . . . That's a yes, right? Between the alphabet and this level of illegibility, this person has to be a child. Or someone with really, really bad handwriting.]

Why would you write the alphabet on this?

Practice.

[Look on the bright side, Hubert. At least he knows how to spell.]

[That's the one redeeming part. Practice, huh . . . ]

You must have run out of paper, then.

I did. [The last D in that sentence looks especially shaky.]

[That "d" . . . All right, who is this -- he refers back to the initial entry. At a second glance, the letters resemble their script in comparison to those of others in Luceti. Perhaps he hadn't noticed because it's what he's used to (and it's chicken scratch, come on). Names flash by in his head.

Ah.

. . . Uhh?

It has to be someone else. Anyway, he should write back.]

And you do not mind publicizing your writing for the village to see.

No.

[Then again, this just might be a more effective means of practicing.]

[This is a great opportunity for him to practice the question mark. So here it comes, very loopy and drawn out.]

Writing in a public space draws attention. More importantly, it gathers responses. The written conversation that follows, like ours, should allow you to practice in an interactive environment.

Simply put, it is more engaging and diverse than it would be on paper.

I understand.

[It wasn't entirely Lambda's reasoning when he started practicing in his journal, but Hubert's got a point.]

[With that answered, he asks a question of his.]

How long have you been writing?

Not long. [... Technically.]

[Well, he was hoping for something more specific, but that's better than nothing.]

After your arrival in Luceti?

Later than that. [Only for about a month or so, to be precise..]
