Mary, Called Magadalene makes me think of The Red Tent. It's also fictionalized, but about one of the biblical families. I bet you'd like it, if you haven't read it yet.
I have read it, and loved it. I can see the comparison. I'm kinda a sucker for fictionalized lives of biblical women, in a sort of women's mythology sort of way. As distasteful as I find Orson Scott Card's personal politics, I actually have enjoyed his 'Women of the Bible' series.
I, too, love the ways that current authors present the lives of women is such a disrupted time. being alive to watch one religion conquer so many others? it would have been scary, and amazing, and ... history. clearly.
If you like the transgressive style of Palahniuk, you might want to look into a predecessor of his, Georges Bataille. However, where Palahniuk utilizes humor, Bataille utilizes philosophy. Pretty much the forerunner of modern transgressive fiction. I recommend his "Story of the Eye". A quick read.
