The dell I've got now (Latitude D505) works well enough, although I'd suggest getting one with the extended warrenty -- I've already had to replace the DVD-ROM, the motherboard and the external power supply (the audio out still won't work right).
But in general I think dell is satanic as well. I've heard good things about Sony for the most part. Look around a bit, make sure it does all you need it to. Like, go check out a PC game that you REALLY want to play [even if you don't end up playing it] and make sure the computer has better than the minimum specs.
I'm quite pleased with my Dell Inspiron 700m. It's very stable, has good battery life, and an excellent wireless module (Intel IPW2200). I was also able to drop a 120GB drive into it without much difficulty, so don't let Dell rip you off on a larger hard drive.`
