I read A Town Like Alice when i was back in year 11 or 12. Unfortunately my clearest memory of that was telling my English teacher about it, and then saying that I was disturbed by the 'crucification' scene and having him say: "Errrr, there's no such word as crucification - I think what you're looking for is crucifixion". It was just a very embarrassing mistake to make in front of my English teacher of all people :P You're right that it's a very racist book but I suppose it's an accurate reflection of what life was like at the time and the mentality that people had at the time. I remember enjoying the movie/mini series as well because it's suspenseful and I actually really like war stories that are about love/friendship etc. I don't think I've liked Bryan Brown in anything else he's been in since A Town Like Alice.

Thanks for reminding me about Dear Enemy again. I must re-read it.
