A/N Part 1: First, disclaimer of sorts: I have no fucking idea what the Tears of Heaven plotline is. I also don’t know what culture and everything was like in South Korea during the Vietnam war. I have NO CLUE. This fic is purely based on the premise of these three hot guys in the Korean army that are sent to Vietnam during the war.

I also kind of fudged details a lot a little to make the story work. >.>

This fic is all 0101xiahtic’s fault.

Kim Junsu had always known that he was an odd kid.

In elementary school, he would always be the one picked on and bullied by the other, bigger kids who didn’t like how he looked or acted. He was called “bastard” in one day more times than he could count on his hands. It wasn’t his fault that his biological mother had left him on her cousin’s doorstep, forcing her to adopt a child that she had never wanted just because he was “family.”

In middle school, he was that kid who ate lunch in the library, away from any and all malevolent or piteous gazes. The girls looked at him and giggled behind their hands. The guys sneered and jeered in his face. It wasn’t that he was ugly or nerdy. Being quiet and socially awkward is always a guy’s worst enemy in middle school.

In high school, he realized that he liked men better than women.

In university, his adoptive parents disowned him when they finally found out.

He had tried to work his way through the rest of his second year, but had eventually dropped out due to social and financial pressures. The part-time jobs became unbearable when one of his bosses had pinned him against the wall and tried to take off his pants at the end of his shift.

When he quit that job, he quit it all. He walked out on all his jobs. He withdrew from school. He said goodbye to anyone who he thought would actually notice that he would be gone. He simply disappeared from the lives of those who wouldn’t even give a damn.

Most of his “friends” never even seemed to notice that he was gone.

When he saw all the posters and recruitment for able-bodied young men to fight in the war that was starting down in Vietnam, Junsu took the opportunity and ran with it. No one would know him there. No one would know his story. He would just be another low-level soldier amongst thousands.

A fresh start was exactly what he needed.

The months of training that were mandatory for soldiers seeking to be deployed to the battlefront were some of the most grueling of Junsu’s life, but the feeling of success after he was done was one of the sweetest he had ever felt. Despite the rough days and harsh environment, he felt that he finally fit in for once. He was one man amongst many, all laughing, joking and complaining about the same things, regardless of who they were back where they came from.

The overabundance of attractive guys, muscles toned from weeks of training, really helped with Junsu’s state of mind, even if he didn’t dare make a move. It wasn’t like he had really done much besides stand in the crowd and watch back home, anyways. Besides that one tryst with local playboy Jaejoong, who had taken his virginity in a spectacular manner before running off after his next conquest. The locals referred to this phenomenon as the Hit-and-Run--Junsu wasn’t surprised when it happened to him, and had never regretted their few nights together. Sex with Jaejoong was one of his best memories, and that wasn’t likely to change.

He even managed to make a few friends during training, despite his lack of social experience. In fact, cheerful, outgoing Eunhyuk and shy Junsu had bonded almost the instant they met, despite being polar opposites. In fact, they had become nearly joined at the hip, earning them the affectionate nickname of HyukSu amongst those who knew them.

After completing training, Junsu was assigned to the Blue Dragon Brigade along with many of his fellow trainees and deployed to Quang Ngai province, where in the few coming weeks they were to engage in a search and destroy operation. All the newcomers were both nervous and excited that their first operation would be such an exciting one.

Luckily, Eunhyuk had been assigned to the same unit and bunker as Junsu. They would often end up talking quietly with each other late into the nights, unless they had passed out from exhaustion due to the day’s brutal training, learning as much as they could about each other. Junsu had already spilled so much of his painful past to his new best friend, and had learned much in return.

But he still couldn’t bring himself to tell Eunhyuk that he thought that in a different situation, he would be working up the nerve to ask him out. He felt comfortable and liked being around him. He didn’t want to risk ruining one of the few healthy relationships he had ever had with something that had already ruined his life several times over.

>>>

On the last night before the operation was due to start, most of their unit couldn’t sleep. The entire bunker was alive with nervous chatter and muttering, people expressing last minute worries and reservations. HyukSu were sitting in their corner, talking as usual, when suddenly Eunhyuk stopped in the middle of a sentence, head tilted, looking like he had suddenly remembered something.

Junsu has grown accustomed to his friend’s expressions by now. “What is it?”

“Well, I just remembered that during one of our training exercises today, I saw a guy who looked a lot like you. I actually almost yelled out your name before I got a closer look. It was surreal. He even had your hairstyle down right. Though it’s flipped, on closer inspection.”

Junsu gaped at him in shock, but not because he was actually surprised at this revelation. “Wait, so you mean that you’ve seen someone who looks like me too?”

It was Eunhyuk’s turn to stare now. “Wait, so you’ve seen him? Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I thought I was going crazy, actually. Really wouldn’t be the first time...but you say you’ve seen this guy too? A few inches taller than me, buff but not muscular?” And super attractive, he added to himself.

“Yeah, that sounds like him. This is so weird...the next time we see him, you should introduce yourself. It’s not every day that you meet someone who looks like you.”

Neither of them mentioned that they might be dead before they ever saw Junsu’s mysterious double again.

>>>

The first few days of Operation Dragon Eye went off without a hitch. South Korean military tacticians were known as some of the best amongst the anti-Communist forces, so every excursion was executed without a hitch, enemies eliminated without any problems. As the days went by, Junsu and the other soldiers began to relax again, relieved that none of their worst fears had come to light. Various combinations of units teamed up and went on patrol, taking out Viet Cong guerrillas with ease. As casualties remained low, morale grew ever higher.

Life had almost become routine again when Junsu and Eunhyuk were called to their commanding officer’s tent for an urgent meeting in the middle of their morning training session. Bemused, the two of them had just come into sight of their destination when they stopped in their tracks.

“Su! Look--over there! That’s him!” Eunhyuk tugged frantically on Junsu’s shirt, gesturing wildly to the left, where a figure could be seen walking towards the commander’s tent.

Junsu barely heard him. He was staring intently to the right, where another figure could be seen, hurrying towards the same tent. His heart missed several beats, confirming what his eyes were telling him. The man was just as handsome as he had remembered. “Hyuk, I think that’s him...”

“Of course it’s him, that’s what I just said!” Only then did he actually turn his head to see where Junsu was looking. “Wait a second, but that’s...”

The two men met at the entrance of the tent, where they also they laughed and slapped each other on the back before entering. Junsu and Eunhyuk stared after them, perplexed.

“Well, come on, Su, we’re not gonna figure out anything by just standing here. Hurry up!” Eunhyuk grabbed his arm and pulled hard before breaking into a sprint, nearly toppling over an unprepared Junsu.

“Yah, Heukkie! Watch what you’re doing!”

Eunhyuk just laughed and pulled Junsu into the tent behind him.

The two of them were laughing and slightly out of breath from their spontaneous exercise when they stopped in front of Captain Jung Yunho, who raised his eyebrows slightly at their antics, and saluted. It was a few more seconds before they realized that Yunho wasn’t the head honcho here at the moment.

“Kim Junsu. Lee Eunhyuk. This is Colonel Brad Little, who is in charge of American forces in this area. He’s here with a special assignment for those who have been chosen as the most competent in their respective units. Please join the others.”

Now Junsu looked around and noticed that a good 25 people or so were crowded into the command tent, including the two men they had seen enter the tent earlier. They looked at him with the same shock that he felt, mouths hanging open slightly. He nodded shyly, looking down at his feet, before he and Eunhyuk took their place among the group, facing front.

Since Colonel Little spoke in English, Yunho translated. “You will be sent as a group to seek out and destroy a certain Viet Cong stronghold that we have located recently through an informant. Previous units that have been sent out to disable the stronghold have been virtually wiped-out. We believe that these particular guerrillas are desperate and in need of supplies and reinforcements, which they may receive any day. They are therefore extremely dangerous and we must take them out as soon as possible.”

As the American spoke, Junsu couldn’t help sneaking glances back at his two mysterious mirror images from time to time, though. There was some kind of instinctual attraction that kept him from concentrating fully on the colonel’s words.

He did manage to catch the last bit of Yunho’s translation, though. “We have selected you for this task. You will leave at 1300 today. Is that understood?”

There was a collective “Yes, sir!” even as many eyes widened in surprise. Talk about short notice--it was already past 10 in the morning.

“Good. Any questions?”

“No, sir!”

“You are dismissed. Prepare yourselves--this task will not be easy.”

The group filed quickly out of the tent, some of the soldiers muttering to each other in subdued tones as they split up and headed back in the direction of their own bunkers. Instead of following suit, Junsu grabbed hold of Eunhyuk’s arm and ran after the retreating figures of his two look-a-likes.

Having heard the pounding of their footsteps behind them, the two of them turned around and waited, arms crossed, gestures strikingly similar to one Junsu made regularly, until the two runners finally reached them. Then the slightly taller, slightly skinnier one, who was the one that Eunhyuk had identified, spoke up. “Well, well--isn’t this an interesting combination of people we have here.” Though Junsu wouldn’t describe the man as handsome, especially when compared to the fine specimen standing next to him, his fine features lent him a cute, mischievous look. Junsu immediately took a liking to him.

The other man snorted. “I don’t think ‘interesting’ is the right word for it. I think I would go with ‘creepy.’ Or ‘scary.’” Junsu was struck again by his attraction to the man. He exuded a kind of confidence that was hard for anyone to resist. Back home, he would probably be surrounded by swooning girls and fawning housewives.

Right now though, Junsu was pretty sure he was the only one who couldn’t stop staring, imagining what it would be like to feel those muscular biceps...and other parts of that body as well.

Eunhyuk spoke up then, thankfully. “Like you’re the ones to be talking. It’s like I’m staring at Junsu in the mirror--twice!”

The skinny one looked at Junsu then. Not just looked--he gave him a thorough once-over...and seemed to like what he saw. A small smirk flashed across his features before it disappeared just as fast. “Well then, Junsu-sshi. My name is Jeon Dong-suk. This is Jung Sang-Yoon over here. We found out after we got here that we look like each other because we’re half brothers by the same mother.”

The other guy--Sang-Yoon--continued. “We thought that the two of us meeting was weird enough. But now you come along and get us all confused again. Why do you also look like me? And him?”

Junsu just shook his head in bewilderment. “I’m adopted, so I never knew my real mother. Or my real father. All I knew was that her name was Choi--”

“--Sooyoung?” The others finished with him.

Junsu stared at them. “Y-yeah. So, wait, does that mean...”

Dong-suk laughed. “Yep, it means that our mother was officially a whore. Welcome to the club, brother.”

Junsu shook his head, and just kept shaking. “This is ridiculous. So statistically impossible. This should have never been able to happen...”

“Well, it did. Ever believe in a thing called fate?”

“Well, no, but--”

“Believe in it, brother. It’ll make you head hurt a lot less, trust me.”

With that, Dong-suk grabbed Sang-Yoon’s hand and dragged him off, yelling back over his shoulder, “See you in a couple hours, brother!”

Eunhyuk shook his head too. “I agree with you, Su. This is a little too ridiculous for me to handle. But right now, we seriously need to get ready. We’ve only got a couple of hours.”

With that, he grabbed and yanked on Junsu’s arm again, nearly causing him to fall for the second time that day.

This time Junsu didn’t say anything. He was still too shocked by the fact that he actually had family, of a sort. A real family who may actually like him and accept him, unlike his aunt and uncle. A family he might grow to love, and perhaps might just love him back. Though perhaps not in the way his body seemed to desire.

Unfortunately, the US-supplied military personnel trucks could only take the group so far on their journey to the Viet Cong hideout. After they had been dropped off, they still had more than six hours of trekking and hacking through the jungle before they reached their destination. They had been trained for just such an expedition though, and were soon on track to reach their objective by nightfall.

They arrived at the hideout at the predicted time. The collection of ramshackle huts and hastily constructed lean-tos looked eeriely quiet and abandoned. Everyone looked at each other anxiously, trying to figure out if anyone else had any idea what was going on.

Choi Siwon, who had been assigned the position of group leader, decided to split up their large group into smaller teams to investigate the area and determine why the place was empty and silent as the grave. Eunhyuk and Junsu immediately latched onto each other. His new...brothers (it was still strange to think of them like that) were also close by, so in the end their little group of four was reunited and ready to head out.

>>>

“Ugh, these bugs are really killing me.”

“Ah, shut up, at least your shirt isn’t soaked through with sweat. This heat is awful.”

“Who says my shirt isn’t completely gross and sweaty? Here, feel it!”

“No way! I’m not going to feel your nasty shirt.”

“Aw, come on, you know you want to...”

Junsu smiled despite the uncomfortable climatic conditions. His brothers’ banter floated to him from the front of their little procession, bickering and laughing taking turns in their conversation.

It felt like a normal life he could have led. If he filtered out the scenery around them and their topic of discussion, he could almost believe that the three of them (and Eunhyuk) were back in a warm cozy house in Seoul, living normal lives and talking about normal things just as brothers did. The thought made him smile even wider.

Lost in these daydreams, he didn’t even realize that anything had gone amiss until he felt nothing but air with his next step forward.
