Marian sat at the kitchen table picking berries out of a bowl and then rolling them around on the surface of the table. Once or twice said berries would roll onto the floor, and Marian would be forced to pick them up and throw them out one of the nearby windows.

Of course, she had to do it while Guy was not looking, so she had to time it perfectly-it became a sort of game.

After she had tossed a good amount of berries out the window, Guy turned to her, eyebrows raised. “Are you going to actually eat them? Or will you just continue to throw them out the window?”

Marian blushed. “I figured you couldn’t see me.”

Guy smirked back at her. “I noticed when you kept looking at me every ten seconds.”

Marian’s reply was drowned out by the sound of hooves. They both looked at each other and paled; their quiet world of solitude was about to be shattered.

Guy moved first, quickly turning to the window and shutting it. Then they stood in silence, eyes wide, waiting.

A voice broke the silence.

“Here little lovebirds, come out, come out!”

Guy’s mouth fell open, “How did he..?”

“I know you’re in there, and you’d make it so much easier if you would just come out.”

Guy shook his head at Marian.

“Alright then, maybe we should ask the old Sheriff what he thinks.”

Marian’s knees buckled underneath her, and Guy took a step forward to catch her. She righted herself and looked up at Guy pleadingly. “What are we going to do?”

“We don’t actually know if he has your father yet.” Guy pointed out.

The Sheriff’s voice could still be heard. “Speak old man, dammit! Speak!”

There was a cry of pain, and Marian let out an involuntary “Father!”

She clapped her hand over her mouth and looked up at Guy to apologize; he would not meet her eyes. The Sheriff laughed, “I knew you were here, now I’ll give you two minutes to decide if you’re coming out before I kill the old man.”

Marian let out a soft cry. Guy heard her, and his features clouded over with pain.

“I’m going to do it Marian.” He said softly.

“What?”

“I’m going to turn myself in; I’ll negotiate with him to leave you and your father here, where it’s safe.”

“Guy-”

“If I don’t, he’ll kill your father.”

She looked up at him and couldn’t help thinking, he’ll kill you too.

“I’ll be fine.” He said, as though reading her thoughts. Marian suddenly realized how close they were standing. She looked up at Guy, his eyes were fixed on her face, and he had a curious look on his. He moved his face closer to hers, his eyes scanning hers for a reaction.

Later, neither could say who had started the kiss, but there they stood, kissing like their lives depended on it.

Marian’s legs and lungs had all but given out when Guy finally broke the kiss.

They stood there, staring at each other. The corner of Guy’s mouth twitched, as though trying to suppress a smile.

“I love you Marian, it’s taken me all these years to say it, but I love you.”

“Guy, I-”

“Tick-tock-tick-tock.” Came the Sheriff’s voice.

Guy’s hands slipped down off her waist. “Stay here, ok? No running after me.”

She nodded slowly.

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

He leaned down and kissed her on the cheek, then walked to the door. “Goodbye Marian.”

“Goodbye.” She whispered to the empty room, keeping her hand behind her back, hiding her crossed fingers.
