He cradled her body safely in his arms and against his chest as he stepped out of the raptor and onto the solid ground. She couldn't walk on her own, so Bill had opted for bringing Laura here himself. His step was not as careful and steady as he had hoped, and he could feel her tense in his arms as a sigh escaped her lips.

"I'm sorry." His apologetic eyes found hers and he noted that she was smiling despite her predicament.

"It's okay." Laura's arms tightened encouragingly around his neck and he continued moving forwards, prying his gaze away from her face to look at the stony path before them.

The end of their journey wasn't far ahead and he hoped that it would be as painless and comfortable for her as possible. Luck, or the Gods, whatever you wanted to call it, was not on Bill's side, as he almost stumbled, and as he fought to regain his balance he could hear her moan against his shoulder and Cottle grumble with discontentment behind him.

Sure enough, Jack wasn't able to hold back his opinion.

"She shouldn't have made this trip," he addressed his superior, but the Admiral didn't slow his step or turn to look at him.

One look at Laura's still smiling face was enough to urge him forward. Yes, she was here against doctor's orders, and yes, she probably shouldn't have made the trip, but she deserved this. To see what they had been searching and fighting for, for so long. Despite the fact that it wasn't helping her condition and that she had been in pain for most of the trip.

They had almost reached their destination and he could feel Laura's arms round his neck tighten in anticipation as she bit on her lip to prevent any more signs of pain or discomfort from escaping her.

She felt the warmth of the sunlight dancing over her face, a sensation that she hadn't experienced in such a long time, and turned her head to take a look at what Bill had wanted to show her. To share with her.

They had finally reached the top of a hill overlooking a valley and, as far as her eyes could see, there were shadows of clouds dancing over almost eternal plains, strange but beautiful birds gliding in wide circles over lush forests and a small river that snaked its way into the distance where it disappeared between some faraway hills. The sight brought tears to her eyes, for everything was green and beautiful and alive. So different from New Caprica. So much better. This was the perfect place to settle. This was Earth.

The realisation took her breath away and she stifled a sob as new tears flowed freely from her eyes. Almost instantly she could feel his arms tightening around her, and her heart warmed at his thoughtfulness. She turned her head to look at his face and found him studying her. She smiled at him then, and it was heartfelt and genuine, despite the pain and discomfort surging through her body.

They had found Earth. Together.

They had accomplished their goal to find a place for their people to get a second chance and, as the thought registered in her mind, she could feel all the pent-up tension leave her body.

He smiled at her then, letting her know that he felt the same way.

Finally, she could let go.

As if guessing her thoughts, Bill motioned to the left with a jab of his chin, as he began to whisper.

"It's almost impossible to see it from here, but up in the forest, there's this little stream. The water is so clear, it's like looking though glass."

She followed the direction in which he had pointed and felt her eyes tear up and her throat tighten. Turning to face him again she removed one of her hands from behind his head and touched his cheek as her eyes came to rest on his smiling lips. Slowly, but with determination, she shifted in his arms, ignoring the pain, until she could feel his breath hot against her face. There wasn't much space between them, but she waited, almost for permission, for him to close the distance between them.

He smiled as he brought his mouth to hers. He was still smiling as the softness of her skin and the sweetness of her taste attacked his senses. So perfect. Their lips moved against each other silently, slowly, each tasting the other and committing each moment to memory.

They parted, too soon, and while he was momentarily lost in her smiling face, bathed in sunlight, he lost his balance, stumbling backwards, losing his footing. As the world shifted around him he could hear a surprised yell from Laura and Jack's words, that she shouldn't have come on this trip, came back to him. They found themselves in a heap on the floor and even though Laura had landed on top of him he could hear her moan in pain.

Jack was by their side in a second and from the look on his face he wasn't a happy camper.

"Frak." He eyed Adama's head where it had hit the ground and Bill felt his fingers encounter wetness when he touched his throbbing skull. "You'll live," Jack told him, and turned to tend to Laura, whose face was scrunched up in agony. Shaking his head, he turned to shout over his shoulder at one of the officers standing near the raptor.

"Get me the wheelchair," on a second thought he added, "and a camera while you're at it!" He looked back to the leaders of humanity still tangled in a heap on the floor and was torn between telling them 'I told you so' and laughing out loud.

"Pray that we don't have to reset it," he told the President, gesturing to her leg, which was encased in a provisional cast.

Bill wanted to say something, wanted to get up, but he felt Cottle's hand on his shoulder.

"Stay down and don't move. It'll be better for your head and for her ankle."

He pointed at the President, and Bill couldn't hold back a smile when he found her still resting on his chest, safely in his arms. He was rewarded with a smile from her, that was only mildly distorted by a grimace that reflected the pain that she must have been feeling. Even Cottle's complaining wasn't able to affect his good mood.

"I'm almost surprised that the two of you made it this far without getting yourselves, or us for that matter, killed." Cottle took Laura's hand and, with the help of one of the officers who had arrived with the wheelchair, helped her to get up and sit down in it.

"You survived the destruction of the colonies; you survived Baltar's and the Cylons' reigns on New Caprica; you even survived cancer. Twice," he pointed out to her, and she tried to dismiss his complaint with a wave of her hand.

"Jack," she started, but Cottle wouldn't let her continue.

"And on the day you finally get to see Earth, you are just a little bit too enthusiastic, a little bit too excited, and you stumble down the stairs of the hangar deck. Could have been your neck instead of your ankle. But do you slow down? No!"

Bill grimaced when pain flooded through his head as he sat up and locked eyes with Laura, who seemed to silently ask him for backup. He just smirked at her and shrugged. Cottle, who turned and took a look at Adama's head, was right after all.

"You go against doctor's orders and without a proper cast you decide to go down to Earth. One day!" He almost jabbed the finger in her direction before he continued, "I asked you to wait one day! But no. No one listens to me." He noticed Adama's smirk and prodded the wound on his head a little too forcefully.

"This goes for you too, Admiral. This is your fault, too." After cleaning it, he pressed a patch of gauze against the wound on the back of Bill's head. "Hold this there. You should be okay, but I want to keep you in sickbay tonight to make sure you don't have a concussion."

Bill's hand replaced Cottle's on the back of his head and he slowly got up. Pointing at Laura, Cottle went on, "That goes for you as well."

He looked from the President to the Admiral and back again. "The two of you can keep each other company. At least that way you won't bother me." Cottle motioned for one of the officers to push the wheelchair and started making his way back towards the Raptor.

Laura took one final look at the valley stretching out below them before the wheelchair was turned around and they started to make their way back downhill. She felt Bill fall into step beside her and, when she looked up, she was greeted by his smiling face. Reaching out, she took his hand into hers, giving it a squeeze before letting it go again. She was surprised to feel him holding onto it, had thought that he wouldn't want to show that kind of intimacy in front of the officer pushing her wheelchair. She felt his thumb caress the skin on the back of her hand, even as his gaze left hers to look ahead.

They would be able to look ahead now. Leave everything behind them and start anew. A future together. Maybe with a little cabin in the woods, where Bill had indicated. Laura tightened her fingers around his in anticipation.

This was only the beginning of a new chapter of their story.
