Okay, so I have to create a thesis for my final papers in the Toni Morrison Class and my Women in Horror Class (which I also need to create a presentation for). My mind is completely blank. I'm not even sure which movies I want to cover in the Women in Horror Class. Here's my list of possibles:

Scream Trilogy (I especially like the way they play ( Read more... )

duh, psycho vs. alien, or how the rolls of women have progressed along with the equal status of women. I mean, sigourney weaver could never have happened, even in the 70's. was there ever any other strong kick ass females before her? I can't think of any...

I was reading an article about how Sigourney Weaver's character is rooted in low budget slasher films. Like, Ripley could've never existed without Jamie Leigh Curtis's character in Halloween or... well, the only other one I can think of right now is Sally from the original TCM, but she didn't really kick butt, she just survived.

Yeah, I think I could use that video for the presentation and that would kickass. I'm going to ask my professor if it will be okay, because we do have an article that basically discusses the scene in depth.

Dead Alive and Alien Resurrection - That's why I love them. I might end up doing the presentation on TCM2 and the paper on these other films... I just need to think about it some more.

Thanks for your advice.

A really good one for the women in horror would be High Tension if you still haven't seen it. The plot was really great and it deals with some genderqueer/transgendered issues in a very interesting and basic kind of way. all around a good study of horror but the two main characters are women and it's a hell of a ride. You might also want to look into watching Audition for that one. Also a great story and a femal as the antagonist. It is, along with High Tension, one the most gripping study's of horror I have ever seen.

I still need to see both of those films. I'll start looking them up. My main fear is getting the Jet Li High Tension by accident.

there are a lot of good asian horror films that look at elements of the female gender (motherhood, etc.) in changing times (like how women resolve being taught that you have to get married, have kids, you must have a man in your life blah blah blah in a world where really you DON'T need all that stuff) - granted, the result is often insanity and/or vengeance, but they are still great films. some good ones are ( ... )

Staying away from the horror topic because I can't even watch horror films and thus know nothing about them...

Is the Toni Morrison paper for Jo? Personally, I think direct criticism of Morrison sounds like a great idea, precisely because she loves her. She'll think you're gutsy and awesome...that is, if you do it right. Have textual and secondary evidence for your views, don't just baselessly attack the author. You may have to broaden your approach (I haven't read the book), but I totally know you can pull it off. I really think Jo would go for it. Ask other peoples opinions, don't just go off of mine, but to me the start of your idea sounds really exciting and well formed.
