I've been working on this list for awhile, and I'm still not entirely happy with it. I didn't want to put in the work to make a top 50 list, but I was similarly unable to cut it down below 30. While I think all of these films are objectively great, and I could make a reasoned argument for each, a lot of this is based personal favoritism as well ( Read more... )

Thank you! Yeah, my brother is just being a jerk. He actually agreed with my top ten anyway, since he can't help but see a good movie here and there after having lived with me for so long :)

i am bizarrely pleased that although i am not really -- a fan of movies in the general sense, i have seen a significant number of the films on your list.

and i have to ask, did you consider Igby Goes Down and Donnie Darko for this list?

I did actually; they're both leftovers that I ultimately excised from the final list. I had a really hard time not including Igby because it's a personal favorite. And with Donnie Darko, I know that it's a cult favorite, but I never really understood the hype; I find a lot of it kinda contrived, to be honest.

Some of the other movies that didn't quite make it: Milk, Man on Wire, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Paris je t'aime, The 25th Hour, Mysterious Skin, etc.

Now I'm kinda wishing I had made room for Igby, damn you <3

I strongly agree with many of these. Children of Men is SO underrated, how come more people aren't obsessing over that movie? Also, when I saw No Country For Old Men I wasn't super impressed. Then again, I was in a really shitty mood, and I only saw it once, so I think I just need to see it again. Also, I haven't see There Will Be Blood Yet and I need to ASAP

Yeah, No Country is one I warmed up to A LOT on my second viewing. I was slow to see There Will Be Blood too, mostly because of the time commitment, but it moves faster than a lot of people initially claimed, and it's really mesmerizing and brilliant and yeah, I love it a lot.
