Film Review: Paranormal Activity 4

Film: Paranormal Activity 4 (2012). Young Actress: Kathryn Newton, age 15.

The fourth film in the horror franchise delivers nothing that you haven't come to expect of it. Like most adults in the Paranormal Activity movies, the clueless parents in this film are too stupid to live, which leaves their teen daughter Alex (Kathryn) to investigate the strange disturbances on her own.

Although the material is predictably poor, Kathryn (in by far her biggest role to date) creates a likable, realistic character with plenty of pluck. Typical of her generation, Alex is constantly connected to her cell phone or laptop, but refreshingly, she still enjoys acting like a kid too, playing on her little brother's swingset with genuine gusto. And once she realizes that her brother is targeted by the demon haunting their home, she acts like much more of a parent to him than their actual parents ever do. Unfortunately, she doesn't live to see the end, and since she's really the only character you're rooting for, her death makes the whole movie feel pointless.

Alex investigates some spooky goings-on.
