Awards Season 2011: Screen Actors Guild

Feb 03, 2011 19:55

The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Held January 30, 2011, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

2011 was a banner year for former, current, and upcoming child starlets at the SAG Awards. We'll start off with the ladies who attended, from youngest to oldest:

Kiernan Shipka, age 11, along with the cast of her show Mad Men, was nominated for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. They lost to Boardwalk Empire.

When Ariel Winter (who turned 13 just two days before the show) took the stage with her Modern Family cast, she stood directly next to Ed O'Neill, who plays her grandfather, and her adorable, overwhelmed giggling was picked up clearly by the mike as O'Neill made the acceptance speech. Awww!

Hailee Steinfeld, age 14, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for True Grit, but she lost to Melissa Leo for The Fighter. (Melissa also beat Hailee at the Critics Choice Awards. Likely she'll beat her for the Oscar too, but we're still hoping that Hailee will win it.)

Sarah Hyland, age 20, along with Ariel and the rest of the cast of Modern Family, won for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Former young actress Natalie Portman, now 29 and pregnant with her first child, won Best Actress for Black Swan, and in her acceptance speech, she thanked the Screen Actors Guild for looking out for her during her early days: "I've been working since I was 11 years old, and SAG has taken care of me. They made sure I wasn't working too long and made sure I got my education while I was working. I'm so grateful to have this union protecting me every day."

And another former young actress also went home with an award: Claire Danes, now 31, who won Best Actress: Miniseries or TV Movie for Temple Grandin.

Ironically, to win her award, Claire had to beat out Winona Ryder ( Mermaids), now 39, who played her sister in the 1994 film Little Women. Winona was nominated in the same category for When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story. She was also nominated along with Natalie and the rest of the Black Swan cast for Best Movie Ensemble.

Although they didn't attend the show, two British child actresses were introduced to American audiences when Geoffrey Rush thanked them by name in his acceptance speech. Accepting the award for Best Movie Ensemble for The King's Speech, Rush said: "I'd like to congratulate as part of this ensemble the members of my onscreen family. Playing Helena and Colin's children, the lovely Freya Wilson, who plays our current Queen when she was 10 years old, and Ramona Marquez."

Like Natalie Portman, Rush thanked SAG for protecting actors' interests and concluded with, "If young Freya Wilson, for example, reaches the maturity and goes on to act... she could well be standing up here in 2070, and that's what our industry's about."

Ramona Marquez, as Princess Margaret, and Freya Wilson, as Princess Elizabeth, with their onscreen mother Helena Bonham-Carter in The King's Speech. Ramona, age 9, is already a rising star in her native country for her role on the popular British sitcom Outnumbered. You'll be able to see Freya in the upcoming remake of Jane Eyre (set for release in March), where she plays Jane's cousin Eliza. Adult Jane will be played by Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska.
