Not too many young actresses attended Halloween events this year, but here are recaps of a few who did and what they wore:
Joey King, age 11, as a hippie at the 17th Annual Dream Halloween Benefit, October 30. I'm usually a fan of Joey's fun, sometimes silly style. (Remember the adorable outfit she wore to
Lollipop Theater's Game Day back in May?) But this costume ... woah! The loud, busy shirt, clunky accesories, and (especially) the wig all overwhelm the little star.
Kay Panabaker, 20, also at Dream Halloween. Halloween events are usually attended by the youngest young actresses, and it's a bit surprising to find a girl of Kay's age there. Which is understandable. Many older teens find the idea of donning costumes babyish and immature. But there's certainly nothing babyish about Kay's lovely period princess gown. The color complements her complexion beautifully.
Kathryn Newton and Bella Thorne, both 13, as fairies at the Megamind premiere, October 31. Remember
Halloween last year, when Kathryn and Bella went as Alice in Wonderland and Little Red Riding Hood, respectively? I was surprised by the innocent choice of costume. This year, not so much. The girls have traded their fairy-tale frocks for short, tight, low-cut dresses, resembling lingerie, with oversized wings. But at least they're better than the dominatrix outfit that little Noah Cyrus wore last year.
And finally...
Jodelle Ferland, 16, as The Hunger Games's Katniss Everdeen. Jodelle didn't attend any public Halloween events, but she got lots of attention when she posted photos of this homemade costume to her Twitter page. Jodelle,
Isabelle Fuhrman, and
Chloe Moretz are all huge fans of the popular Hunger Games books, and with a movie production in the works, Jodelle and Chloe have both said they covet the role of teenage heroine Katniss Everdeen.
There's been a flurry of debate over who should be cast in The Hunger Games, which offers three roles for young actresses: Katniss, the 16-year-old main character, and supporting players Prim (Katniss's little sister) and Rue, both 12. By dressing as Katniss and posting it to her Twitter account, many felt that Jodelle was only fanning the flames, or even worse, suggesting that she was the only young actress right for the role. Jodelle quickly released this statement: "I think some of you aren't getting why I dressed up as Katniss. I am a huge fan of the books, and I thought Katniss would be a really fun costume. Don't take it so seriously. I'm not trying to say, 'Hey, look at me, I should be Katniss.' It's not a competition. Halloween is my favourite holiday, and I love to dress up as my favourite characters. For fun."
Chloe Moretz, meanwhile, has said that she "would absolutely die to be in The Hunger Games." But while Chloe is a great young actress, she looks nothing like how Katniss is described in the books, and with all the projects she's already got lined up, I'm not sure when she even find the time to play her. Jodelle at least looks the part.
