Yes, I do actually enjoy phone calls!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

I agree with everything Ellen's saying in this post:

How the web is changing certain social exchangesThe personal back and forth is what makes it all worthwhile, in my opinion. I even get annoyed at friends who overuse email instead of the phone, because even email is slightly less personal. I love actually seeing ( Read more... )

Oh, it SO bugs me when people say "I don't like the phone" like that's an okay thing to say. Email is NOT an excuse to retreat into socially awkward behaviors. I know I shouldn't let this bother me so much, but, I mean, come ON! I'm an only child and habitually single, and I love alone time more than most people, but that doesn't mean I can't handle a conversation. I don't want to live in a world of people who don't like to talk to people. Argh, it bugs.

I have felt this way since I was a young whippersnapper (well, late 90s? an old whippersnapper at that point, but not yet a dinosaur) when people from mailing lists (so old I am) would get weird about talking on the phone. It made you weird then, it makes you weird now!

I admit, I'm one of those people who can't stand talking on the phone. I took a job after college that required me to speak on the phone a lot, which did force me to learn to cope with doing it in business situations, but I'd still much prefer either dealing with people over e-mail or face to face - I'm most comfortable via text or when I have visual communication cues. Disembodied speech still freaks me out, and if I can avoid making a phone call I will. Luckily my best friend is exactly the same way, and most of my friends live overseas, so we tend to do all our communicating over e-mail/LJ/IM/Twitter anyway.

It's actually kind of funny that this was posted, because I was about to do a last "If you want to see me next week, comment here!" post in my LJ for my U.K. friends. LOL. I have e-mailed some of them directly as well, but since we all met through LJ anyway, it seems like the most appropriate place to make plans.

I haven't used this icon of Peter on the phone in forever. I love getting to use icons I never use.

I love this icon.

I suppose it's different if you do mainly communicate through LJ/Twitter/whathaveyou. In my situation, this was someone I'd known ten years who I'd shared ten hour car rides with and lived like, blocks from me. . .and like, now we communicate via facebook only? But the what?

Can I join the young dinosaur club, too, please? I'm not too fond of phones, mainly because I sometimes have problems understanding people if I can't see them, but otherwise I'd take one on one conversations over social networking sites and what not any day, be it in real life or via web-cam.

Yeah, I'm definitely more of an in-person or phone person. Not that I have any problem with online communication, clearly. But if I had to choose? Real people-time every time, thanks!
