Almost every year while at medical school, and for some of my postgraduate exams, I would have a dream with a similar theme (though different particulars) about a week before the first exam: I would turn up in my pyjamas ten minutes late, often to the wrong venue, with nothing to write with except one of those short stubby pencils one sees at the newsagent for filling out one's lottery tickets. If that. I used to call it my "Don't let this happen to you!" dream.
Needless to say, when came the day for the real thing, I would be an hour early and would be a walking stationery shop. For my final pathology exam, where failure was not an option, I not only brought extra pens and spare globes for my microscope, I brought an extra microscope and the one writing implement in the world that would never, ever stop working - a nib pen with ink bottle.

THAT sucked. Ever since then I've been extra careful whenever going someplace I might need to write things down with a particular instrument.
...Although I don't even own a nib pen with ink bottle. Hee.
