And there was Lucatz. Just the man he needed to see. Sometimes it was wonderful being the sheriff -- all he had to do was think of a minion and they unfailingly appeared. It was nice, but then all too often they wanted something for themselves. He hated it when other people had their own agendas. In an ideal world, other people would do nothing but further Vaizey's goals.

Well, he needed to instruct him about the Gisbornes moving chambers anyway, he supposed he would have to see what the man wanted while he did so. Hopefully whatever it was would include doing something about that hideous smell in the map room.

"Yes, yes, a few moments I suppose."

He swept into his office and arched an impatient eyebrow at the young man. It was best not to mention he had his own reasons for seeking Lucatz out. He would feel less certain, more like a supplicant this way. It made it so much easier to manipulate someone when they needed something.

He sighed inwardly, but his gratefulness showed in the widening of his smile. Vaizey didn't seem happy to see him, exactly, but he didn't seem all that bothered by his request either. Lucatz followed him into the room and quietly shut the door behind him.

"Thank you, my Lord, I shall try to be brief. This evening and tomorrow I will be going through the castle, taking stock of its furnishings and conditions, and seeing what needs cleaning or repair," Lucatz paused, so that hopefully the Sheriff would understand that he was reluctant to bring up the subject. "If there are repairs to be made, then I may need funds. It would not be much I think, as some I should be able to do myself- the loose stones in the north stairwell, for example, I could replace myself if I could acquire the mortar."

Lucatz was trying to be keep his explanation short, but he didn't want Vaizey to dismiss him without first hearing his reasoning. Plus he had his words partially pre-planned and it would be a waste not to use them. He clasped his hands in front of ( ... )

Ah. So he wanted money. Normally, he would laugh in the face of anyone who made such a request, but in this case Lucatz actually was furthering Vaizey's goals. Now that Prince John was in the castle nothing was more important than making sure it was perfect. The prince did like his luxury, and Nottingham was hardly London ( ... )

Lucatz's eyes lit up as Vaizey not only gave him permission to do ask asked, but told him not to 'scrimp' and gave him permission to venture wherever he liked. That was far more than he asked for, obviously he'd said or done something right to get such a reward. Vaizey's generosity turned quickly into command, and Lucatz was fast to respond.

"Absolutely, my Lord! I shall see to that tonight. That mistake will not happen again," Lucatz spoke firmly and chose his words carefully. Mistake is what it most likely was, he couldn't imagine anyone deliberately disobeying such a simple command. Perhaps someone had simply spilt bathwater near the door, or dropped a perfume bottle. He would find out and have the area scrubbed as soon as possible ( ... )
