Icky Hump

I reached my threshold for the mediocre folk music they often play on KXCI. I'm talking about those relatively unknown folk musicians whose only claims to fame are playing for packed coffee houses. Never mind that those coffee houses were packed because people wanted caffeine and free Wi-Fi.

I've been taking breaks from KXCI and listening to Read more... )

I hate KFMA for, among other things, being stuck in the 90's. Motherfuckers play Nirvana EVERY HOUR. If you're going to be stuck in the 90's you could at least mix it up a little.

I call the KFMA morning show "The Boy Show." Not only is it Nirvana, it is only two different Nirvana songs that they'll play. After they're done with that, it is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, again only utilizing two songs from their entire catalog. I would suggest 92.9 The Mountain as an alternative as the DJs actually sound like they graduated from college.

"The Boy Show" is an apt title for that crap in the morning. It's all boob and penis jokes and other such stuff. I'll start checking out The Mountain.

A thousand emo kids? That's a lot of loathing! I'll start searching the dial better. Or maybe I'll just return to KXCI now that I've had a sufficient break.

I liked the rock channel that played Alice Cooper at night. Always had some good classic rock and almost *never* played the Eagles, which I was just fine and dandy with.

On Icky Thump...
It's amazing that the Stripes wrote anything political as they choose to stay out of the political music as much as possible. It's a big step for Jack White to put that in there, but I think that because of these lyrics, it is decisively against government efforts to curb immigration. Albeit, it's a simplification that is hard to overcome, but he just points out an interesting thing we all long to forget:

`Well, Americans:
What, nothin' better to do?
Why don't you kick yourself out?
You're an immigrant too.

Who's usin' who?
What should we do?
Well you can't be a pimp
And a prostitute too

Either way, electric bagpipes man...electric bagpipes...

I know! The solos in "Icky Thump" rule! I used to never take much interest in The White Stripes, since I thought there were other bands that did a better job with the contemporary psychedelic/retro rock sound (or whatever you want to call it). But I dig this song a lot.

I wonder how many formerly apolitical bands have expressed political opinions in the last few years. I never saw or heard anything political from The Dandy Warhols until they put an anti-Bush icon in the liner notes of one of their recent albums (I don't remember which one).
