Ok so the no NC-17 fics seem to upset a lot of you, so I'm going to let you all decide on that ( Read more... )

You know, that bit about what people read and don't isn't restricted to NC-17. For example I know for sure that there are many who don't like reading het-fic, including me, or who pleinly won't read it and won't certainly give any points for a het-fic...

But that's because you don't like it, not because you find it offensive? I wouldn't have allowed NC-17 Het fic either..... And I need to protect the youngsters of this comm too....

I admit it is not that I don't understand your approach and your decision.

But on the other hand it is also a question of how you define 'offensive'.
Personally I find it offensive to read in a fic how some young girl, often very young, tries getting closer to a player who's maybe even married in real life. It doesn't need to be NC-17 in this case and I'd still find it appaling even though it's fiction.
What's offensive and what one likes or not, the line between that is often rather blurry.
And so many things are called offensive by us just for that very reason - because we don't like them and we don't want them in our lives.

Thus, if it is no NC-17 to protect younger participants, that must be fully accepted, but if it is to appease people who can very well chose not to read certain stories, and only feel uneasy with the knowledge that such things exist, that is something I just can't follow.

and some wouldn't read any sort of slash either, be it tame or X-rated...

imo a fair vote is an utopia. there's a lot of stuff that can turn off potential readers, why forbid just nc-17, what about e.g. kinks, especially blood play? or vice versa, some might not particularly like fluff and skip it, or even if they do read it but there's another angsty fic they won't vote for fluff :D even the pairing can be a squick, including the ones everyone is supposed to luuuv like s/x.

in short, "if there's people that don't read ____, they won't vote for the ___ fics either!" can be applied to just anything.

no offence meant, absolutely. voting seems to be a fair decision (:

True but I also gotta protect the youngsters in fandom, there are people under 17 who will find their way over here as well! And I don't want to held accountable for spoiling them or anything :\

I'm probably going to seperate the NC-17 from the non-NC-17 fics in voting, that way I can at least attempt to keep it from people that shouldn't or don't want to read it and well, people who do want to read then will simply have to make an extra effort to go through two posts before they vote. But I may change my mind on how I'll do that. It's a work in progress.

there are tons of other comms that may spoil them, i really don't think there will be ever a new user who hasn't read any fics at all :D besides, whatever isn't allowed usually just induces more curiosity, doesn't it?

and why not just put the nc-17 fics at the end of the post, why do people who don't like them have a privilege over those who don't like some other stuff? :D

Thanks for putting up this poll!

I'm hoping the people who vote won't just think about themselves and their own preferences when it comes to writing and reading fic, but that they will take a more liberal, tolerant approach. Diversity is, after all, what makes the world go round.

A 100% fair vote, in my opinion, isn't actually possible for the reason karneol_vision mentioned.

Oh, and considering the youngsters in this community, I'm sure all of them are old enough to decide for themselves whether they want to read something or not by paying attention to a story's warning or rating.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Het fic, but that doesn't mean that I won't read it. There's not much I won't read, once it's well written and isn't a)all one run on paragraph, or b)contains so much bad grammar, punctuation and spelling that it makes my eyes bleed.

I can understand why there's a rule against NC-17 fics, but I would give a warning AND use an LJ cut before the actual fic. If age is a problem, do what other comm mods do, and ask for the applicant's age to be made visible in their profile. No age on display, they don't get accepted.
