Olof Mellberg has issued a statement regretting that he did not follow the rules. However the newspaper “Sydsvenska Dagbladet” says all three players now refuse to play on the national team as long as Lars Lagerbäck remains coach.

Lagerbäck had a conversation with five "role models" about the rules, as it was extra important that they understood and followed the rules. Among those were Zlatan and Mellberg. And that's why, only days after they've decided the rules, when they broke them it was extra important to do something.
And that's why they're not playing against lichenstein (so it's only a one match ban). Lagerbäck also says he would've done the same thing if it was Spain they were playing against.
Both the Captain Ljungberg and the veteran Nicklas Alexandersson is behind the decision, saying that all rules must be followed.
According to Allbäck who has talked to Mellberg, he's regretful.

Hope that helped some :)

Slightly offtopic, but lmfao, Sweden always has drama before or during international competitions. (last euro, after their first world cup match...) It just makes me love them more. You gotta love the Swedish drama though ;D

And I say they'd be stupid not to play on the NT anymore *shakes head*

On that second link, Freddie speaking Swedish *rawr* Makes my day XD

During the 2002 World Cup (Sorry, just found out it wasn't at the euro '04), Mellberg and Ljungberg had a fight, which you can watch here and after their first game in June, there was this.

oh, so i've been reading about a bit. and now it seems like it's only zlatan and willhemson that's threatening to quit. I think it'll just blow over and they'll continue to play, just luck that it happened before the lichenstein game and not spain.

Really? That has got to be a rumour, because of this. After that, how could Zlatan go back and threaten not to continue playing as long as Lars is around?
