So I spent the day with Pat yesterday at his house. Originally, we were supposed to attend a dinner-party of a sort at Brandon's house, but Brandon didn't hold up his part of the bargain and didn't e-mail me his address. -_-0 How irresponsible. *fumes ( Read more... )

Leroux was a journalist. That explains it all.
It's really quite a stupid story the way HE puts it.
No no, you don't trully get the Phantom legend until you've read "Phantom" by Susan Kay.
DON'T let the original cross off your interest in that one.
I read the original first myself, and if I hadn't happened to stumble across S.K.'s novel, I'd never have thought much of reading it.
But it's worth it!

LoL Well, I don't usually do spin-offs, but it IS on my reading list, so I will end up reading it. I will research into it. I think partly, it MIGHT be a true story.

No hon, we phans have been at it for decades.
I myself, for 7 years. Sadly (and I went into denial about the fact for a while), it isn't actually a true story.
There was never a Christine Daee. She was based on rumors about an opera singer named Christine Neilson.
The only character that (IF I remember right) was based on fact was Meg Giry, who did marry a Baron and then later became empress.
But I again might be mistaken.

Oh, and note that Mme Giry wasn't a ballet mistress in the original. She was keeper of box 5 ;)

Aw, well that's too bad. Gaston Leroux is a great author, though. I didn't hate the book, and his writing does not need improving. I guess if Phantom is as great as you say (and again, it is always a matter of perspective), he can dull out in comparison.

You have to put Exorcist in perspective, for it's time.. it was a truly terrifying and gruesome film, especially the subject matter - it had never been done so seriously before, with the demon being in the body of a little girl. By today's standards it isn't so scary, but when I first saw it as a young kid, I was scared shitless.

Leigh Whannell is very lucky. He was basically stuck making 5 minute films and doing movie reviews on our local television and one of his short films, starred himself as the victim of the serial killer Jigsaw. He sent it off to the US and got offerred the film deal. He is now doing a three movie deal for Universal and is a millionairre.

LoL Well, no-no. I'm not miscrediting it. It MUST have been a huge thing back then. I was just saying that I was expecting too much of it going into it, I guess, because everyone's been tooting its horn so much, and I got disappointed because I didn't get what I was hoping for. But I still think it's alright and give it its dues.

I agree with you that it's quite boring for most of the film. ;P

Check out Exorcist III... it has less horror, but isn't boring and is quite a good thriller involving the cop from the film and the "dead" priest.

I'm reading the Odyessy right now for school. It's pretty good. I'm glad everything is going good for you. I'd love to hear from you and hang out sometime, so give me a call, alright?

Yeah... It's a bit boring as far as I'm concerned. Sorry I haven't called yet, I'm very busy right now - a lot of things on my mind.

I thought The Exorcist was dumb too, funny in a few parts, but overall dumb.

Btw - you switched *off* the comments on your shock me post instead of screening them. ;)
