oh hell, that is SO saddening.

some of my friends in Portland had an incident in their neighborhood a few weeks ago, where an elderly senile man got violent. when officers arrived on the scene, the first thing they did was shoot the dog. the dog wasn't being aggressive or biting, it was just adding to the general chaos of the scene. it seems like "shoot the dog first, ask questions later" is a common theme in police response to incidents.

It seems that the drug war is an excellent example of the adage "cutting off the nose to spite the face". In our government's attempt to "punish the guilty", they have in fact not only punished the innocent but clearly hindered public health with regard to infectious disease. See some examples here: http://www.drugpolicy.org/drugwar/publichealth/... )

If we had the government we deserved...

That is truly appalling. But I'm afraid, for the most part, we do have the government we deserve. You would think that we would hold law enforcement to a higher standard than normal people. They are entrusted with a great deal of power and that should come with an increased level of responsibility, but most of us don't have the stomach for that. We'd rather feel safe than be safe, and we'd rather have vengeance at any cost that justice or peace.
