What tool(s) do you use?

The sonata was built with Ableton Live and the Ableton Essential Instrument Collection. Funky Five is Ableton live with the Operator plugin for FM Synthesis.

I like the sonata, although there are parts that feel a little mechanical (only parts, though!)

Listening to the next one now...

Well, it is pretty mechanical, actually. I can't play the piano so very well, so it isn't recorded, it is sequenced. The sounds are very good, but I also don't know that much about piano performance dynamics. I tried to vary it up a bit, but I'm not so good with that. Also, the tempo really doesn't wander at all, which is atypical for this sort of music.

Is this the gist of the mechanical sound, or do you feel the composition is mechanical?

No, it's not the sequencing. There are just portions where it seems everything is a quarter note. You do mix it up most of the time and don't get me wrong - I like it, and I am duly impressed. I was just saying there were parts that felt like they could use some more... flourishes? Something to make it feel more organic.

Hmm. Yeah, I read a bunch of stuff about sonatas, and then explicitly tried to mimic the form, but I haven't really had any of that sort of music theory, so I'm not surprised that I didn't quite deliver.

Made my mom cry when I gave it to her, though, so I still think I am successful.

That Funky Five will totally come back with a vengeance, as I've learned a lot of production tricks since then.
