Salt potatoes!

Jan 31, 2011 12:15

Growing up, my ma often made a side dish called “salt potatoes.” After moving to California, I had no idea that salt potatoes hadn’t made it all the way to the west coast. Even the BF, who grew up in southern New York, ( had never heard of salt potatoes. )

Salt potatoes don't sound special until you have them, then it all makes sense, and anything short of a REAL salt potato just doesn't cut it.

i know.. it's hard to talk about a boiled potato and try to get across how epic salt potatoes are to someone who has never had them

I grew up in upstate and have moved to CA (~7 months here) and I'm pretty surprised by this! The weird thing is I never craved salt potatoes this past summer in California, but man now that you mention it I want some! (Salt potatoes for my family was definitely a summer thing too...I'm not sure if that was just us or if that's true of all salt potato eaters, haha.)

My wife's cousin lives outside of DC, and when they built a new Wegmans there, they actually had a line around the building, and a person standing at the door so that no one could get in until someone left. The store was absolutely packed.

Customers were excited to be able to get Zweigles and salt potatoes. When the store didn't have them, and enough people asked for them, the goods were brought in and stocked there on a regular basis. The way Wegmans treats its customers makes me proud to be from Rochester.

Yum! I was served this one by my grandmother, in VT. Then I spotted the salt potatoes at Wegman's and now we indulge in them every once and a while. I love when your teeth burst through the salty outside into the sweeter inside. Yum! And oh, I'm in Baltimore, MD and trying to get other people to try this deliciousness.

I don't know why I don't get off my lazy ass and make these! So easy. I miss salt potatoes at the State Fair...erm, Expo, or whatever it is now. CNY Forever!

These look so yummy! Question though--when you did the 1.5lbs of potatoes (instead of 4), did you dial down the salt and water? Or was it still 8 cups of water and 1.5 cups of salt?

Thank you!
