Dinner party

This weekend I made dinner for my cousin and her family ... the first time I've ever had to prepare that many dishes on my own (though they ended up helping some) and for that many people to depend on me for dinner! Kind of stressful and I definitely need more practice on the art of having everything come together at the same time, but also fun ( Read more... )

soup, shrimp, tart, mashed potatoes, zucchini, scallops, danish pastry, onions

That dessert looks like pączki (which is Polish and usually pronounced like what you heard). There's probably a version of these in every country though.

That tarte looks delicious.

Exactly what I would have said.

Tuesday (Shrove or Pancake Tuesday) marks the beginning of Lent (starting with Ash Wednesday) which is 40 days of fasting for practicing Catholics. So, there's a gluttonous blowout of sugar and fat/butter in the form of these donuts which are often jam filled. In the US they're popular in the Hamtramck area especially so most Detroit residents know about them.

And I ate 1/2 an apple caramel one and 1/4 a chocolate one, so that equals.... waaaaaay too many calories.

In Danish those would be called Berliners or just doughnuts...I think the baker was wrong!

Thanks for the info! Yeah, either the bakery got their origin wrong or my cousin remembered wrong. I'm glad to know the true name/origin!

It's one of the fussier things I've ever made, with all the straining and switching back and forth between liquids, but it's definitely worth the trouble. I hope you enjoy it!
