I can never find barley in any of my regular grocery stores. Do you have to go to a specialty store to get it, or is this just a California thing?

How odd! I've never had a problem finding it... usually with bags of rice and lentils and stuff. If not there, you might find it near the boxed/bagged soup stuff. I lived in CA for a while and the Safeway near me carried it. If nothing else, any place that has bulk grains (like a natural food store) would have it. Barley's very cheap, too. Good luck!

Yes, I thought it was odd myself, being from NY where it is everywhere. I never thought to look by the soup though..... maybe I'll look there next. Thanks!

PS that risotto looks awesome.... yet another reason to find me some barley in this town!

You'd also do well to check out ethnic, particularly Middle Eastern or Eastern European, groceries.

I'd been wondering if such a thing were feasible; I'm diabetic, and barley's great virtue is its low glycemic value--about one-third that of rice. That looks like something I'll have to take a shot at, once the power's back on at my place (no one in Ohio was expecting the Spanish Inquisition, aka Hurricane Ike.)

(Speaking of Spain, now that I think of it, Spanish barley might be worth a try as well.

That's great information about barley - I had no idea about the glycemic value! I just knew it had lots of fiber. :) Bummer about not having power... I'm in Indiana and all of my mixing bowls and buckets were put into use catching the leaks, though we didn't lose power (thank goodness!). Hope it comes back on soon!

The scuttlebutt is that some of you guys (for reasons your user info makes clear, I'll refrain from asking your precise location) got up to eleven inches of rain; how accurate is that?

Ike in Ohio, at least in my neck of the woods, was eerily *dry*, with multiple layers of silvery overcast (and an odd fluctuating patch of white sunlight--perhaps that was the eye?) and straight-line winds, but no rain to speak of; it was only after the system had passed that a soft drizzle began to fall.

Oh yes, we did. One of the roof leaks filled a 5 quart bucket TWICE. It poured and poured for 2 days straight. We'd had rain all week, but Saturday and Sunday was the longest, hardest rain I've ever seen in this part of the world!

Heh, that's how I decide what goes in the risotto... whatever's in the fridge! Enjoy! :)

I hope you like this. Barley is my very favorite grain, I love it's chewy texture and not too many dishes feature it where I'm from, so I just had to invent something full of barley goodness. :)
