Dutch Paella

Feb 14, 2007 12:08

I bought some good spanish chorizo a while ago and finally got around to using it. I jokingly call this "Dutch Paella", only because it is made in a Dutch oven, not a conventional paella pan. I have an aversion to single-purpose cooking implements.

The funny thing is that Dutch ovens are not used in Holland at all :)

I believe they share an origin with the name "Pennsylvania Dutch" - it's an obsolete cognate of the word "Deutsche" and means "German", and is named after the Mennonite groups that settled in the area - the Quakers, Amish, and so on. The dutch oven would be a simple cast iron pot.

A quick google found this page which seems to confirm it, though the writer clearly doesn't know that "dutch" doesn't mean "Hollander" in this general context.

So, most likely named either for Pennsylvania Dutch traditional cast iron pots, or for the special sand-cast technique for making iron pots and pans.

Did you get your aversion to single-use cooking implements from Alton Brown? :o)

No, not at all. It's just an issue with having too little storage for the kitchen tools I already have. If I can't make something do double-duty (or much more), then I can't spare the space for it.

heya,
I saw this the last time you posted it very recently, and it does indeed look yumm!

Only one complaint though, no recipe :-(, so any chance of you posting the recipe for us, so we can all try it if we want to?

Thanks heaps,
Sacred Harlot.
