My latest craving, and a recipe for BLT pasta.

Jul 19, 2006 23:06

I go through phazes when I crave a specific food almost to the point of insanity. I've gone through it with swiss chard, bok choy, kim chee with sticky rice, peanut butter, rose flavored turkish delight, ting ting jahe ginger chewies, and the list goes on and on. My latest obsession is sauerkraut ( Read more... )

spinach, bacon, sauerkraut, pasta, arugula, tomatoes

You had me at She would slow-cook a pork roast with sauerkraut, and serve it with mashed red potatoes with the skin left on..

It's not the kind of thing I can eat every week, but when I want it, I really want it. Sauerkraut and mashed potatoes are just the bomb.

I mostly cook for myself, so I usually only cook once or twice a week. When it's really hot out, I try to cook as little as possible. Things like BLT pasta are really easy and quick.

I like sauerkraut on kosher hot dogs, or just straight out of the jar.

I also get obsessive about foods. Right now mine is Korean seasoned squid.

Hmm I had a short affair with salt and pepper squid. What's Korean seasoned squid like?

It comes frozen and its actaully raw. It is bathed in this suuuper spicy mixture of red chiles, jalapenos and salt. Even my Korean friend thinks I'm hard core for eating it, but I think its the shiznit. I tried to find a link to a picture, but I couldn't. If there's a Korean grocer near you they may have it.

Sounds cool! Is it eaten raw, or cooked? (I know, I'm big with the questions tonight!) I'll have to check out the pan-asian supermarket up town.

Saurkraut: Rinse, place in kettle, add juniper berries (10 per pound, more or less, depending on the berries), almost cober with white wine or good beer. Simmer a couple of hours until liquid is pertty much evaporated. During cooking, add, timed so they wil all cook at the same time, any or all of: smoked pork chops, bratwurst, bockwurst, (other wurst), regular pork, and cut(s). Basically, we do an Alsacian style Choucroute garni. I could live on this. Oh, and you can saute some bacon at the beginning and add chopped onions, but I never bother. I would love to eat your mother's pork roast!

Choucroute garni sounds lovely. I can't picture how the juniper berry flavor fits in, but it sounds like it would be lovely and aromatic. I haven't had my mother's pork roast in a very long time, but I still think about it.

Well, I guess if it were a cocktail, it would be gin and saurkraut juice. Hmmm. Not the best recommendation. ;) Juniper berries are very popular with game as well as being the flavoring for gin. It's very European.
