I recently moved to an island in Puget Sound. In fact, I live just moments from Penn Cove. That would be the Penn Cove of shellfish fame. It's delightful to live in a place where the grocers proudly stock the local mussels. They're cheap and plentiful!

Beer, Onions and Linguica. Hearty and spicy, especaly on a cold night with some nice bread to sup up the broth.

Beer ... YES! We had some mussels in the Midwest that were steamed with beer. Loved them! Would you recommend a specific type of beer?

I would avoid the really dark beers because I think the bitter notes would crush the flavor of the mussels. Being from the northeast, I'm biased towards sam adams. (In the summer, their seaonal brew is great with the mussels.)

You might want to try their winter warmer but if you do that, you might want to add up on the sausage and lay off onions.

Could you substitute clams w/ mussels and try a Manhattan mussel chowder?

Oh I grew up near where they would harvest mussels and oysters. Take advantage of those. (I live in Seattle now) You should cook some mussels in beer. It will be excellent. Trust me.
