Hi guys! I'm new here! I just thought that I would begin my membership with a wonderful recipe from Bon Appetit (which I tweaked a bit) that I made the other day for a family barbeque.. it's heavenly- unlike any other cobbler i've ever had ( Read more... )

Turbinado sugar is raw sugar- not granulated. You can find it at specialty food stores =)

It's a brand new recipe from the August Bon Appetit with corn cobs on the cover.. I think it's still in stores!!

Process the vanilla bean with the sugar? I've never done that, but I'm curious! Does it taste much different than sugar that's set in a container with halved vanilla beans ... which is my usual method for making "vanilla sugar."

Actually, it's a lot more potent. It smells really strong, not sweet and pleasant like some vanilla sugars- and it works like a charm in really giving another depth of flavor. For the dusting, I used the turbinado (raw) sugar with the halved vanilla bean in it (basic vanilla sugar) and it tasted completely different, which surprised me!

I made this yesterday and it was *really* good. I think I would add more fruit next time though, maybe another pint of blueberries. :)
