So, writing a story in semi-kinda-sorta-but-not-really Japan*, at about present day. My characters are going to an insanely fancy art museum exhibit opening of a regional artist with (semi-kinda-sorta-but-not-really) European influences. In several of the original Pokemon episodes, Ashe and crew had standard rice balls with them(packed by a Mom), and they seem to pull pots out of their woo-hoos when in the wilderness. When Jesse and James go to the old summer home of James, there are some indications of European style foods, but the 'comfort foods' still seem to be rice balls and sushi. And several of the competition gatherings have nondescript buffets that people eat from.

Of course, this is all from memory, as *cough* I don't have the series on video.

I personally would go with a combination of cultures, especially for the stuff being served to the adults. For the child, what would 'gross' him out or be unusual enough for comment? Or adversely, would he seek out the stuff that was familiar?

Well as I said, this would be high class stuff...unfortunately I have no idea what that wound entail in this world.

Yeah, combination of cultures works, but aside from that...

The child's going to seek out stuff that's unusual because he thinks it's what high-class people should eat (my character's father is very wealthy but lives simply, so the kid resents him for it and wants to experience what they "should" live like).
