"Gods be true, Arya, sometimes you act like such a child," Sansa said. "I'll go by myself then. It will be ever so much nicer that way. Lady and I will eat all the lemon cakes and just have the best time without you."
I've been a huge fan of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga since well before HBO intelligently decided to make it a TV series, and one of the things I was looking forward to seeing on screen was the feasts. Because my god, can those people eat. Food is practically another character in the novels. Some fans have even made a food blog based on food from the books! :D Which is, of course, awesome.
Anyway, lemon cakes are a favorite treat in Westeros, so when HBO released a recipe for them, I of course had to try it out. It seemed iffy at best. I mean, a TV network (that wasn't the Food Network), giving out a dessert recipe? How good could it be? Turns out I needn't have feared. The recipe is actually by Tom Colicchio -- and it's great!
The HBO version of the recipe isn't incredibly clear, so when I was making them I was sort of hoping the right things were happening. It wasn't until they were done that I knew I'd done it correctly. So I clarified the recipe more to help other people not have to muddle through HBO's version. The original and the clarified recipes can be found
here.
