Banquo's Dream

Dec 18, 2008 15:34

Cursed thoughts battle heart
In this head of mine,
They make me wonder at my senses
Wonder if I'll cross that line.
Three of them look at me
With inhuman, cursed eyes
And I wish to ask them,
"Have you lived that many lives?"
I dream of many things this night
Of death and pain and blood.
My generations reaching back
And yet, of guilt, a flood.
They tempt me with these visions
These weird sisters three,
Of a crown upon my son's head
Oh, from this dream let me be free!

Notes: Written for a high school Shakespeare class. It's from Banquo's perspective, who comes from Macbeth. In Macbeth, three witches give three prophecies about Macbeth to Macbeth and Banquo. The final one is that Macbeth will end up King. However, then they tell Banquo that his sons will be kings. We see Macbeth caving into the whole prophecy that he will eventually be king, and how it drives him rather mad, but we never see if Banquo was ever tempted by what the witches told him. He's human, so I'm sure he thought about it at least.
