Battle of Basque Roads

Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Basque Roads which began on the night of the 11th of April 1809 and lasted for three days. The fleet, which was charged with destroying French ships anchored off the Île-d'Aix, was under the command Admiral Lord Gambier, however it was Lord Cochrane who led the attack. Thank you for posting this - and I love the caricature especially - I have seen it of course but not looked at it its detail quite so closely before.
Alas for metrical psalms and the like and the violence they do to poetry

Moab is my washpot was admittedly always one of my favourite lines to chant in evensong - though not for any reasons of poetry

it also is the title of the first volume of Stephen Fry's biography of course

all of which is a long way from DIsmal Jimmy of course !

I only know it from Stephen Fry.

I love the cartoons they made then, especially the talk bubbles. It is endlessly fascinating to me to see the way they saw themselves. And you get a real pungent look at the language in cartoons.

I like the guy who wants to throw shells.
