A little inspiration?

I had high hopes of running all kinds of challenges this year, but alas, real life has been persistently time consuming over the last six months. However when katriona_s posted last week asking for inspiration, it made me wonder if perhaps there is something I could do to spark some creative endeavours ( Read more... )

I believe that his reference to things going on in 'the deep' was somewhere near his heated description of sailors holding hands for hours!

Some nice person has written a paper on the erotic content of Moby Dick. (I mean beyond the urge to snicker at anything called 'dick.'

The thing that is most striking to me about this passage is the sweet affection that comes through. The 'hand' holding and 'hand' squeezing was done with great kind love, obviously.

Oh I say! That's splendid! :) Though I am utterly ashamed to admit that I have never read Moby Dick. I really should, as I thoroughly enjoyed White-Jacket. I have a copy of Redburn here too but I've never got round to reading that either! *stands in corner with dunces cap on*

*ears prick up at the mention of Bush*

Interesting fact I learnt about Mars recently: People mistakenly believe he is interchangeable with Ares, the Greek god of War - but not so! Aries was the god who delighted in the wanton destruction and carnage of war; yet Mars was not only a god of war, but an agricultural guardian too. He was the god of war as a means to bring peace, and by extension the god of war in service of the State.

Also why they're called the 'martial arts'. There is an art to combat; a restraint, dignity, prowess and inherent code of conduct. Well, that's the ideal, anyway...

It's amazing how that ideal has persisted too, despite the terrible inglorious reality of war.

No, stop! Don't slink away again! Mr Bush has missed you terribly, he's been sorely neglected of late ...

Fascinating. Speaks volumes about Greek and Roman society and values too.
