Fic. Blindfold Justice ( with two Archie sonnets )

Oct 17, 2012 14:28

An incident with a court martial in Gibraltar causes Sir Edward and Archie to re-evaluate each other. This has to be classed as an AU in a way in that seen in the context of Retribution it would be rather too sadly ironic ( Read more... )

I love this, and the sonnets are wonderful.

Also this:
Bowles was aware that Archie needed to be aware of the possibility of being touched and to have the possibility of avoiding it when he chose

Perceptive man, Bowles. And kind. My poor, dear Archie.

Bowles is very perceptive - he watches and listens and reflects - but he is a man of action too

Archie is glad you approved of the sonnets !

So this is where you have been. You have been sitting in the great cabin of the Indy, taking notes! I hope you at least got some madeira!

Really this is wonderful, subtle and prickly and very grown up, (that is your Archie, always, and I find him more accurate than mine.) EP has the ability, which he surely did have, to temper rebuke with humor, and to weave compassion into adherence to law.

Justice, as you say.

Let me second Rikibeth about Bowles. Those men learned a lot just by living didn't they?

And your sonnets, as well kicked the breath out of me, as usual.

So glad to read this.

Archie presents to me just in a variation on a theme with the other dearly appreciated word pictures we get of him around here.
prickly he is and apt to fly off- but he is experiencing the revelation of himself regarded in other's eyes as worth attention and i think here learning that others besides him face tough challenges - even devious captains :)

Archie is always pleased when he gets the latest sonnet off the starting block =
he has been a little slow lately - too much - er - shore leave going on -tsk tsk

Aw. Happy (sadly happy if such a thing be possible) sighs. So ironic indeed in view of the TV Hornblower canon.

They could never make a film of EP's life. Who'd believe a word of it?

he would be a very contemporary hero combined with the genuine swashbuckling age of sail hero

a handful of angups and angst from his boyhood resulting in some greed et al

a loyalty to king and country which made yet room to befriend the other side

and a father in law acting with calm and affectionate regret over his son's messy divorce and entertaining the grandchildren at home

- and that is before the campaigns for justice and the Dutton and the freeing of several thousand slaves
why would anyone believe it indeed :)

I'd love to see it made, though. I have a hankering for Russell Crowe as older EP. :)

Dammit that made me cry. But then you knew it would. Archie and Will together are just too much. This is wonderful though, really wonderful.

Before
all else , the institutional welfare should
take precedence?
No comment. *sigh*

unaware that he had achieved in one halting speech what the enemy never yet had succeeded in doing in twenty years of service and battle- profoundly disconcerting Edward Pellew
I love that. Only Archie could do it.

So when men’s tales
are told of this, long time since victory ‘s hour
be thus recalled, integrity’s own power.
I really, really hope we can do their integrity justice. For Ned, and for Will, and for Archie, and for the cause of humanity.

There's lots of lovely little character observations in this that I really enjoyed, such as Archie being a bit wary of Pellew at first and Horatio learning that sometimes he should just shut up.
