Fic: Happy Returns

Jul 04, 2012 19:15

In honor of Lord Hornblower's birthday, I offer this small fic. I am afraid I am not up to the task of presenting the contents of the other present mentioned in the story, for I have never been good at describing such things. I hope this will be satisfactory.

TITLE: Happy Returns.

Blakeney! And Captain Kennedy with his own ship too. This is really wonderful.

It is sweet to see them married, and yet so careful to be proper. So like Horatio to 'inspect' as excuse for a visit.

Thank you!

I figured that Blakeney would be as loyal to Amelia as Archie was, and that Archie, once given his own command, would move fairly quickly through the ranks, breathing issues notwithstanding.

"It is sweet to see them married, and yet so careful to be proper. So like Horatio to 'inspect' as excuse for a visit."

Well, Horatio's always worried about people judging him, and Amelia understands that she needs to follow the rules if she wants people to look past her appearance. So they know exactly how to navigate waters like these.

Awww lovely!

“Certainly,” Hornblower answered, fiddling with her ears
So cute!

I love the sound of Hornblower's birthday cape. I'm sure he will look splendidly handsome wearing it.

Amelia's still a mite sensitive about her ears, but she allows Horatio to manhandle them, because a) she trusts him, b) he's proved time and again that he thinks they're beautiful in their own way, and c) he knows how to touch them in ways that turn her to mush.

As for the cape, it was the best present idea I could come up with. I'm sure it will keep him quite warm.

Aww, I really like the idea of them all remembering and planning behind Horatio's back!

Yeah, Horatio always struck me as someone who didn't particularly care about his birthday once he passed twenty-one, and assumed no one else would care either (not that this overly depressed him). He doesn't get that his friends want him to be happy on his birthday. With friends like them, though, he'll eventually come around.
