Smile! You're on Following Sea...

Earlier in the week there was some silly fangirling going on over at my journal (hard to believe I know) regarding which of Archie's smiles is the most gorgeous. eglantine_br went for his "incandescent" smile when he first catches sight of the Indy, where as I favoured the smile at the end of Mutiny when he catches sight of Horatio being all heroic again. It's hard to choose between Archie's smiles, they're all gorgeous :) As well as the one at the end of Mutiny, I also adore the smile he gives Horatio (and lets face it, it's always Horatio he's smiling at...) when they return to El Ferrol at the end of The Duchess and the Devil.

I don't know if it really counts as a smile, but I also love Pellew's smirk at the beginning of The Duchess and the Devil, as he hands Hornblower his orders to sail to the "big damp foggy island nor'nor'west of Ushant."

Plus honourable mentions to Bush's "Never touch 'em!" smile in Retribution and Matthew's overjoyed expression when they fish the lieutenants aboard Renown after their little leap off the cliff top :D

Nobody can smile like Archie! But Horatio's smug smile in the boat (with his hair all ruffling) and some of the others are delightful as well. And Edrington's smirk up there - that's the one where he's watching Horatio fail at horses, isn't it?

Isn't that the "And your own concerns last night? I trust they were concluded satisfactorily?" smirk?

It might be! Right now I'm watching the Smirk make appearances in Cambridge Spies.

I am struck by how different each smile is. Each face wearing the action in its own way. In the end I could hardly decide. I chose Bracey. It was down between Bracey and M'man Hammond. I chose Bracegirdle. His smile looks so lived in and well used!

I know nobody has much love for poor Wellard, but I think his smile at Wet!Archie after the cliff jump is most radiant and charming.

I love Wellard too, the dear little woobie. Pity the actor hasn't done much of anything since then.
