Book Review: Lord Hornblower

Nov 13, 2011 10:39

I finished reading C. S. Forester's Lord Hornblower a couple of weeks ago.  Today I've have finally gotten around to writing a review of it, and present said review here.

Do be aware that there may be some "spoilers" within the review, especially for those who are planning to read the book in the near future.

Thanks Dave! Excellent review. You're got ahead of me here, I haven't read Lord Hornblower yet. Your review has encouraged me to promote it up the reading pile though!

Hope you enjoy it when you do read it.
I'm still hoping to write a post a piece comparing the writing of CSF and POB one of these days. I enjoy both (and other writers of the same type of fiction) although they write in completely different styles.

Thank you for this in-depth review. It may prompt me to read the Hornblower series one day instead of browsing the books.

I would be looking forward to reading that. If your review is anything to go by then I would be hoping for fresh insights.

Again thank you.

Glad you like the review. And by all means, do read the Hornblower series. It can be read in random order, which I did several times over the decades, or you can read it in order of HH's life and career. Forester wrote in such a way that very little is lost in reading at random. I know that some who have gained an interest in Hornblower via the movies and even the fan-fic are sometimes a bit disappointed in the books, but they are the original stories. I read them all so long ago that other than the Gregory Peck movie, they were all that existed. I suppose that's why I take them as the more "official" version.

I've got a start on the CSF POB comparison piece. Depending upon other things, I may get it finished and posted over the weekend.
