Further to the conversation that sprang up in anteros_lmc's post yesterday, I found these little gems on YouTube from 1983;

...though LJ doesn't seem to like the embed curretly, so I'll link you to it - The McGanns: 'Shame about the Boy' (Lead vocals Mark McGann) and Red Light (Lead vocals Paul McGann).

There's a couple more here of Paul alone with two groups - the Darts and the Mint Juleps;

Oh he looks just the same. But this has helped a lot! Great research.

Glad it managed to banish the Jackson 5 image. ;D

The two vids in the comments were from 2010, so he still does a bit of singing now and again. Mark is involved in music the most of all thr brothers, doing John Lennon tributes when required.

*dies laughing* Those first two are sooooo eighties! I do like that version of Stand by Me though, that's really rather good. His voice is not bad at all but it sounds nothing like his speaking voice! How does that work?!

Part technical explanation: When a person sings the vocal chords lengthen more than when you are simply speaking, so quite often the singing voice is pitched higher than speaking. Don't ask me how that works with Bass, 'coz I don't know, but the way you use your vocal chords for singing is completely different to how you use them for speaking, so the speaking voice and the singing voice will always be different in terms of pitch and voice.

/waffle.

I have a particular affection for "Stand By Me", as it is the unofficial Sixth Form song for my old school. :D

Very interesting waffle! One of the reasons I can't sing is that I can sing a few low notes and a few high notes but not the bit in between! I have an old friend who is a professional singer, she's known my since I was a kid and she knowns I really, really, can't sing but she has always said she'd like to give me singing lessons to try to find out why I can't sing in the register I talk in. Maybe one day!

I'm trying to do the same to sharpiefan. Her voice wanders all over the place and she complains that she's never found her register and can't sing - but will she let me get her near a piano long enough to try and find out? *sighs and shakes head*

Of course if this is turning into the Mr Bush's Greatest Hits thread then it really has to include "Let The Great Big World Keep Turning" from The Monocled Mutineer. Quite possible my favourite PMG clip ever :)

ETA: Meh. Flakey embed code. Link added.

That's now in my Music Hall repetoire.*g* I love that part of Monocled Mutineer, along with the credit version of Oh! Oh! Antonio (Won't allow embed, so link).

I quite like his rendition of Great Pretender as well from Paper Mask;

Wonderful! I approve :)

And yes "Oh, Oh, Antonio" is beautiful, I nearly posted that clip instead. "Great Pretender" is fabulous too. What a talented guy :)

How does McGann sing like this and then start Shouting in that way of his as Mr. Bush? It's weird, and pretty impressive too.

I admit to being curious about what his boyband sounded like, so thank you for digging this up!

Speaking voice and singing voice work in very different ways, and it's quite possible to seperate the two. If you shout correctly, you don't damage your throat.*g*

You're welcome. I was very curious too, but only thought to go digging on YouTube this morning. You can thank Anteros for posting the comment that brought it up. ;D
