After last week’s double casting news anteros_lmc and I thought it might be nice to catch up with what all our boys have been getting up to post Hornblower. I’m not going to attempt to sum up Paul McGann and Robert Lindsay’s combined decades in the biz, I’ll leave that for someone else, but today I shall post a potted history of the careers of Mr. Gruffudd ( Read more... )

I can't speak for the Jamie aspect of it, but the Ioan part is accurate, although I like to think that his career didn't so much stall as he took a hiatus to spend time with his wife and (eventually) his daughter.

Also, what IMDB WON'T tell you is that most of the stuff he was doing during his hiatus NEVER SHOWED UP IN AMERICA, even films that were shot here. *Bitter Ioanite is extremely bitter*.

Really? Odd that American stuff is released here and not in the US! That must be incredibly frustrating. The only thing I've ever had trouble getting hold of is The TV Set which I've still not seen. Oh also worth noting IMDB isn't entirely accurate, they had him rumoured for Banking on Mr. Toad, which I actually thought had potential to be a decent film as Samantha Morton was also rumoured, but that's been up there for at leasr a year with no confirmation.

It's been all downhill since the Cardiff Internet Movie Database became IMDb.com. They should have stayed in Wales!! ;)

It's true. "Fireflies in the Garden" was what really killed me. I was waiting for it, found out it had been shot in America (Texas standing in for Chicago or the other way around), and then it never came out here. You CAN get a Region 1 DVD...if you buy it from the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, "The Secret of Moonacre" finally came out on Region 1 DVD a YEAR after it had been released in theaters/DVD elsewhere, "The Kid", which I swore was Oscar Material, never made it over here, and the one film that DID get released here (W) cut his part down to one scene so it wasn't worth going.

Granted, his one off voicework for animated shows made it here, but I don't have a TV so I missed most of that.

Re: Banking on Mr Toad, I had the same reaction you did. Well, eventually they'll wise up and drop it. It took them about six months for Sanctum to show up on his page, even though all the news articles were mentioning him.

Thanks for kicking this off!! I'll be back tomorrow hopefully with a potted history of the careers of Sean Gilder (Styles), Paul Copely (Matthews) and Duncan Bell (Clayton).

I was so chuffed (chuffed? I attempt Britishisms) to see Matthews in Torchwood 3. The actor really has wonderful charisma.

Yes! That was the part I was going to mention! I though he was excellent in that role.

Win! :D If you want, you could even be "chuffed to bits"!

This is a gem of a piece of work of Ioan's which can be seen and heard from the BBC for free. And in English in case you were worried

Ioan was one of a nubmer of Welsh actors who took part in a series of contemporary stories exploring Welsh myths for children.
He narrates the story of Gareth and Elen from Newport ( Pembs rather than SE Wales) and how they try to help their dad who is a fisherman down on his luck.

And it has it all - a rowing boat, getting lost in the fog st sea and a mysterious island- and a witch called Morgana...
its great for little ones - and for fangirls everywhere
its here
and it is worth a digression.
Just Ioan's lovely anglo-welsh tones though - not the rest of him!

and whilst not attempting the lengthy trawl that Robert Lindsay's last ten years or so career would be as esmerelda_t points out
but on a related
topic he can of course be heard narrating that great children's number

I was going to mention The Story of Morgana! I wrote a post about it here a while back. It's lovely :) and just listen to they way he read the line about the sailor...

Am I right in thinking that Ioan has also narrated the Hornblower audiobooks? I haven't listened to them but I'm sure I remember folks around here talking about them.

I've never seen any evidence the audio books exists in either cd or digital form, only tape and who can play tapes?!

Ah I didn't realise that. Doing some audio digitisation sounds like a job for an enterprising fangirl!

Sean Gilder / Styles anteros_lmc February 23 2011, 14:25:10 UTC
Sean Gilder has had a long and successful tv and film career since appearing as Seaman Styles in Hornblower. Indeed his path has crossed that of his Hornblower shipmates on several occasions. In 2002 he appeared in Ultimate Force, a show which I suspect Jamie Bamber would happily wipe from his cv, then in 2004 he played Jols along side Ioan Gruffudd's Lancelot in King Arthur and in 2008 he made a single appearance in Life on Mars with Philip Glenister (Gunner Hobbs). I'm also really quite excited to see that Gilder will be playing Black Dog (yay!) in a forthcoming tv adaptation of Treasure Island which also features Glenister again as Captain Smollet. Gilder is probably best known in the UK for his long running role in Shameless (a show I have never seen) but he also appeared in the the Doctor Who episode The Christmas Invasion as the Sycorax leader who duels with the David Tennant's Doctor before lopping his hand off and shortly thereafter coming to a sticky end ( ... )

Paul Copley / Matthews anteros_lmc February 23 2011, 14:36:32 UTC
Paul Copley's career spans stage, television and radio. He has appeared in too many successful and long running UK tv shows to mention. One off appearances include Shameless which also features his old shipmate Sean Gilder, and Life on Mars with Philip Glenister. He also appears regularly in BBC radio productions.

Prior to appearing in Hornblower Copley had already won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in the play For King and Country.

As lemurling has already mentioned, Copley played a memorable and really very moving role in the last Torchwood series Children of Earth.
