When I posted my
review of The Commodore at the weekend I happened to mention that I was very taken by the scene aboard Nonsuch when Bush just about has kittens because Hornblower insists on serving hard tack, pea soup and rum to Tsar Alexander and his entourage. Initially sceptical, the Tsar's aide-de-camp is very taken by the rum and also by Captain Bush who he cuddles shamelessly on the quarterdeck before departing. I rather flippantly commented "Is it wrong that I now want someone to write fic where a love-lorn aide de camp chases Bush around the Baltic?!" Judging by the response I was not wrong and several other people want to read aide-de-camp fic too! And lo and behold it has already been written by non-other than the lovely
idler_1814. The aid-de-camp is not exactly lovelorn but he is certainly deeply moved by his experience aboard Nonsuch and by the character of the captain in particular. Like all of
idler_1814's writing it's a beautifully pitched and thoughtful fic and if you haven't already read it I can highly recommend it.

Also while reading
vespican's
review of Commodore Hornblower I was surprised by his description of Hornblower coming down with typhus and:
"Having recovered at the King of Prussia’s palace in Königsberg, and with his mission accomplished Hornblower sails for England in the cutter Clam. He arrives at Smallbridge at Christmas time as his wife Lady Barbara entertains a group of carolers.
None of this appears in The Commodore. Although Hornblower's bone-weary fatigue is referred to with increasing frequency there is no explicit mention of typhus and the book ends immediately after the confrontation with Yorke and the retreating Prussian army, with Hornblower hallucinating about England and wondering "What the devil was Brown doing, staring at him like this?"
I had been under the impression that Commodore Hornblower and The Commodore were identical apart from the US and UK publisher's titles but clearly I am wrong! Are there any other differences between the books I should know about? And can anyone send me a copy of the "missing" chapters of Commodore?!
